Police in Ondo State have foiled a bomb plot in Akure, arresting six suspects and recovering materials linked to the construction of explosive devices.

AKURE, Nigeria – The Nigeria Police Force in Ondo State has foiled a suspected bomb plot and arrested six individuals linked to the operation in Akure, the state capital.

Commissioner of Police, Adebowale Lawal, disclosed the development during a news conference, revealing that the suspects were apprehended on April 15 following actionable intelligence.

According to him, the group had rented an apartment in the Oke-Odu area of Akure, which served as their operational base.

“Operatives were swiftly deployed to the location, where the suspects were arrested before they could execute their planned attack,” Lawal said.

Items recovered from the scene include components suspected to be used in the construction of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), along with 217 bottles, bags of sugar, charms, mobile phones, laptops, cash, identity cards, motorcycles, and other materials.

Preliminary findings indicate that the suspects were actively assembling explosive devices, allegedly targeting government infrastructure, with possible links extending beyond Ondo State.

Police also recovered documents mapping out potential targets, suggesting a coordinated and premeditated plan.

Lawal noted that the operation prevented what could have resulted in significant casualties and destruction of property, describing it as a major security success.

He urged landlords and property managers to conduct proper background checks on prospective tenants to prevent properties from being used for criminal activities.
