A fatal accident involving a tanker and a tricycle in Anambra has left one person dead, with authorities blaming brake failure and urging stricter safety compliance among drivers.
AWKA, Nigeria – A fatal road accident involving a tanker and a commercial tricycle has claimed the life of a rider at Immigration Junction in Agu Awka along the Awka–Enugu Expressway in Anambra State.
The incident was confirmed by the Federal Road Safety Corps through its Anambra Sector Commander, Bridget Asekhauno.
According to Asekhauno, the crash was caused by brake failure, which led to loss of control by the tanker driver.
Eyewitness accounts indicated that the tricycle operator was navigating through diverted traffic due to ongoing road reconstruction when the fully loaded LPG tanker reportedly failed and ran over him.
FRSC rescue teams arrived promptly at the scene, where two persons were involved in the crash. The tricycle rider was confirmed dead, while the tanker driver was rescued without injuries.
The remains of the victim were evacuated to the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital morgue.
Emergency response teams, including the state fire service, were placed on standby due to the inflammable nature of the tanker’s contents to prevent further incidents.
Asekhauno described the crash as avoidable and urged drivers, particularly those operating heavy-duty vehicles, to ensure proper vehicle maintenance and adhere strictly to safety regulations.
“Drivers must observe speed limits and exercise caution, especially around junctions, diversions, and construction zones. Lives are irreplaceable,” she said.
She also reiterated the agency’s commitment to road safety enforcement and advised the public to report emergencies via the FRSC toll-free number, 122.
