APC stakeholders in Abia State have endorsed Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu for the 2027 governorship election, signaling strong internal support ahead of the race.
Umuahia, Nigeria — Stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia State have endorsed the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, for the 2027 governorship election.
The endorsement was the outcome of a post-convention appraisal meeting held in Umuahia, where party leaders and stakeholders across the state unanimously backed Kalu through a voice vote.
The resolution, contained in a communiqué read by Martins Azubuike, reflected a consensus among party executives, former lawmakers, serving legislators, and chieftains from all 17 local government areas.
Participants at the meeting, including representatives from Abia’s three senatorial zones, expressed confidence in Kalu’s leadership capacity and performance, affirming him as the preferred candidate for the party.
State APC Chairman, Chijioke Chukwu, commended stakeholders for their unity and commitment while assuring that the party would maintain a level playing field for other aspirants.
Chukwu also highlighted the party’s growing strength in the state, noting a significant increase in membership from about 7,000 in 2023 to over 160,000.
He added that the party was targeting between 800,000 and one million votes for the re-election of Bola Tinubu in 2027.
Responding to the endorsement, Kalu expressed appreciation for the confidence reposed in him and called for continued support for Tinubu’s administration.
While acknowledging calls from across the state urging him to contest, he said a formal declaration of his intention would be made in the coming weeks.
“I will address a broader audience where everyone will hear my decision,” Kalu said, hinting at a major announcement.
Other prominent party figures present at the meeting included Stanley Ohajuruka, Nkechi Nwogu, and Nyerere Anyim.
The development signals early political positioning within the APC in Abia as preparations gradually intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.
