A cleric has urged killers and kidnappers to value human life, using the Good Friday observance to call for love, compassion and an end to violence across the country.
A Christian cleric, Rev. Fr. Jude Chikezie, on Good Friday decried killings and kidnappings, urging Nigerians to place greater value on human life as exemplified by Jesus Christ.
Chikezie, who is in charge of Holy Spirit Church, Onireke, Ojo, Lagos State, gave the admonition during a Good Friday procession by church members.
He led the procession through major streets in the area, drawing the admiration of residents as participants identified with the suffering of Jesus Christ, including His crucifixion at Calvary.
The cleric said Christ loved humanity so deeply that He laid down His life for the redemption of mankind, noting that His death was necessary for reconciliation between man and God.
“As a people, we are called upon to take after Christ in exhibiting love and care for one another. Christ, through His death on the cross, showed us a template and manual of daily living,” he said.
Also, at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Tedi-Muwo, Ojo, Lagos, Rev. Fr. Anthony Thompson led members of the church in a procession through major streets in the area.
Thompson urged residents to refrain from acts contrary to the teachings of Jesus Christ, stressing that the Lenten season emphasises love, faith, sacrifice, compassion and care for the poor.
He also encouraged Christians to seek forgiveness from God and fellow humans when necessary.
Good Friday, also known as Holy Friday or Friday of the Passion of the Lord, is a solemn Christian observance commemorating the crucifixion of Jesus Christ at Calvary.
Many churches mark the day with fasting, prayer services and processions.
