Lebanese President Joseph Aoun condemns the killing of a UNIFIL peacekeeper after shelling hit a UN position in southern Lebanon, as tensions escalate along the Lebanon-Israel border.
Lebanese President Joseph Aoun on Monday condemned the killing of a United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) peacekeeper following shelling on a UN position in southern Lebanon.
Aoun made the condemnation during a phone call with UNIFIL Commander Diodato Abagnara, according to a statement from the Lebanese presidency.
The Lebanese leader extended condolences to the family of the Indonesian peacekeeper killed when a UNIFIL position in the village of Adchit al Qusayr came under shelling. He also wished another peacekeeper injured in the incident a speedy recovery.
UNIFIL had earlier announced that a peacekeeper was killed and another critically injured on Sunday after a projectile exploded near its position close to Adchit al Qusayr.
The mission said the origin of the projectile remained unknown and confirmed that an investigation had been launched to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The development comes amid renewed cross-border hostilities along the Lebanon-Israel border. Fighting resumed on March 2 after Hezbollah launched rockets toward Israel for the first time since a ceasefire agreed on November 27, 2024.
The rocket fire triggered intensified Israeli airstrikes across southern and eastern Lebanon, raising concerns about further escalation and the safety of UNIFIL personnel deployed in the region.
