President Bola Tinubu urged unity within the APC at its 4th elective national convention in Abuja, highlighting reforms, economic progress and commitment to democratic competition.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called for unity within the All Progressives Congress, describing it as the party’s greatest strength during the 4th Elective National Convention held in Abuja.

Speaking at the convention at Eagle Square on Friday, Tinubu said the gathering marked a defining moment for both the party and Nigeria’s democracy, urging members to recommit to shared ideals and collective progress.

He noted that the theme of the convention, “Unity in Progress: Consolidating the Renewed Hope Agenda,” underscored the importance of cohesion in achieving national development.

According to the President, the party was founded on a shared belief that democracy must work for every Nigerian and that leadership should be anchored on vision, discipline, justice and development.

Tinubu paid tribute to the late former President, Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as the first leader and elected president produced by the party, and called for continued commitment to the founding vision.

He warned that political parties often fail not only through electoral defeat but when personal ambition overrides discipline and collective interest.

“Our greatest strength has never been in our size or numbers, but our unity,” he said, adding that the convention must send a clear message that the party remains strong, focused and prepared for the future.

Tinubu also dismissed claims that the ruling party seeks to create a one-party state, stressing that democracy thrives on credible opposition capable of challenging government policies.

He defended the Electoral Act 2026, stating that the amendment followed due legislative process and reflected efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s electoral system.

The President said the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda was conceived as a governing philosophy aimed at national renewal, acknowledging that reforms required difficult decisions but were necessary for long-term prosperity.

He highlighted achievements of his administration, including infrastructure development, tax reforms, social investment programmes and efforts to strengthen national security.

Tinubu added that economic indicators were improving, citing declining inflation, expanding economic activity, improved investor confidence and increased foreign investment in the oil and gas sector.

He also referenced ongoing efforts to address electricity challenges, including plans to establish the Grid Asset Management Company to improve transmission capacity.

Addressing youths, the President said young Nigerians remain central to the country’s future, urging the party to open more opportunities for youth participation in leadership and decision-making.

He also called for greater inclusion of women, stressing that empowering women strengthens democratic institutions and party structures.

Tinubu urged delegates and stakeholders to conduct themselves with maturity and respect during the convention, noting that internal contests should not divide party members.

He emphasised that the convention provides an opportunity for institutional renewal, strengthening internal democracy and reaffirming the party’s direction.
