The United States has commenced the withdrawal of its troops from Syria, beginning with the Qasrak military base in the northeastern Hasakah governorate.

Syria TV reported on Monday, February 23, 2026, that U.S. forces had started redeploying from Qasrak toward Iraq, although no official timeline or operational details were disclosed.

The development marks a significant phase in the broader drawdown of U.S.-led coalition forces from parts of the war-torn country.

Earlier, Syria’s interim authority announced that its army had assumed control of the Shaddadi military base in Hasakah governorate and the Tanf base near the Syrian-Iraqi-Jordanian border, following coordination with Washington.

U.S. media outlets also reported that Washington plans to withdraw all of its roughly 1,000 troops stationed in Syria. The remaining forces are expected to exit within the next two months, effectively ending a military presence that began more than a decade ago.

American troops were first deployed to Syria in 2014 to support operations against the Islamic State, as part of a broader international coalition effort to combat extremist insurgency in the region.

If completed as outlined, the withdrawal would conclude a 12-year U.S. military engagement in Syria and reshape the security landscape in the country’s northeast.
