President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has accepted the resignation of the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Kayode Egbetokun, and appointed Assistant Inspector-General Tunji Disu as acting I-G with immediate effect.
The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Tuesday in Abuja by the Presidential spokesperson, Mr. Bayo Onanuga.
According to the statement, Egbetokun submitted his resignation letter to the President, citing pressing family considerations.
Tinubu commended Egbetokun for his decades of service to the Nigeria Police Force and the nation, acknowledging his professionalism, dedication and commitment to strengthening internal security during his tenure.
Appointed in June 2023, Egbetokun was serving a four-year term scheduled to end in June 2027 under the amended Police Act.
In view of prevailing security challenges, the President approved the appointment of Tunji Disu as acting Inspector-General of Police, describing him as an experienced officer with significant operational depth.
Tinubu said Disu’s leadership would provide stability for the force at a critical time in the country’s security landscape.
In line with the provisions of the Police Act 2020, the President will convene a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council to consider Disu’s nomination as substantive Inspector-General of Police.
His name will subsequently be forwarded to the Senate for confirmation.
Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening national security and enhancing the institutional capacity of the Nigeria Police Force.
