The Sheshu of Borno, Dr. Abubakar Ibn Umar-El-kanemi, has declared Wednesday, February 18, 2026, as the first day of Ramadan fasting for 1447 AH.

Umar-El-kanemi made the announcement on Tuesday in Maiduguri on behalf of the Sa’ad Abubakar, who is also the President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs.

He stated that Tuesday marked the 29th day of Sha’aban 1447 AH, corresponding with February 17, 2026, and signified the end of the month of Sha’aban and the commencement of Ramadan 1447 AH.

According to him, credible reports of moon sighting were received from Muslim leaders and organisations across the country. The reports were verified and endorsed by state and national moon sighting committees before being officially accepted.

The Sultan urged Muslims to dedicate the holy month to prayer, reflection and acts of charity, particularly in support of vulnerable members of society.

Ramadan is observed by Muslims worldwide as a period of fasting, spiritual reflection and increased devotion.
