The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Ogun 1 Area Command, Idiroko, has intercepted four live pangolins, an endangered species, along the Yemoamota–Abule-Igboora axis of Ogun State.

The Command’s spokesperson, Deputy Superintendent Chado Zakari, disclosed the development in a statement issued on Saturday in Ota.

Zakari said the seizure highlights the Service’s commitment to enforcing the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).

According to him, at about 3:00 a.m. on Thursday, a patrol team acting on credible intelligence intercepted a motorcycle along the Yemoamota–Abule-Igboora and Ebute Igboora axis.

“Upon inspection, officers discovered four pangolins confined in wire mesh cages and concealed within a sack,” he said.

He noted that the method of concealment suggested the involvement of an organised smuggling syndicate.

To evade arrest, the suspects reportedly abandoned the motorcycle and fled into nearby terrain, leaving behind the endangered animals.

Zakari stated that, following the interception, the Command prioritised the welfare of the animals and formally transferred them to a Wildlife Conservation Centre on February 13, 2026.

The handover was conducted by Assistant Comptroller Tajjudeen Bello, Acting Deputy Comptroller for Administration, on behalf of the Acting Customs Area Comptroller, Oladapo Afeni.

Afeni commended the officers for their professionalism during the operation and reiterated the Command’s resolve to combat trans-border crimes, including illegal wildlife trade.

He warned smugglers and traffickers of endangered species to desist, stressing that the Command remains vigilant and prepared to apprehend offenders undermining conservation laws.
