Morocco has been elected to serve a two-year term on the African Union Peace and Security Council (AU-PSC) following a first-round vote held during the 48th Ordinary Session of the AU Executive Council in Addis Ababa.
In a statement released by its Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Wednesday, Morocco confirmed that it secured 34 votes – more than the required two-thirds majority – to clinch the seat.
The Peace and Security Council is the African Union’s standing decision-making organ tasked with the prevention, management and resolution of conflicts across the continent.
According to the statement, since its return to the African Union in 2017, Morocco has now been elected three times to the AU-PSC. The country previously served a two-year term from 2018 to 2020 and a three-year term from 2022 to 2025.
“During these mandates, Morocco has constructively contributed to improving working methods and promoting best practices alongside other AU PSC member states, through a responsible and inclusive approach,” the statement said.
Morocco is participating in the ongoing Executive Council session with a delegation led by its Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nasser Bourita.
The 48th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council precedes the 39th African Union Summit of Heads of State and Government scheduled to hold from February 14 to February 15.
The latest election strengthens Morocco’s diplomatic presence within continental peace and security architecture as the AU continues efforts to address instability and security challenges across Africa.
