The Enugu State Government has approved the immediate construction of a perimeter fence around the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) to significantly strengthen campus security.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Aloysius Okolie, disclosed this on Tuesday during the official commencement of the fencing project at the university premises.
According to Okolie, the intervention reflects the firm commitment of Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah to safeguarding public institutions and repositioning ESUT as a secure, modern centre for science, technology, and innovation.
“This project is about protection, order, and growth. It is not meant to isolate the university from its host communities, but to secure lives, property, and investments for the collective good,” the vice-chancellor said.
He praised the governor for responding swiftly to security and infrastructure challenges confronting the institution, noting that safety and stability were critical to academic excellence.
Okolie further disclosed that the university had already committed ₦1 billion as counterpart funding for the construction of two modern hostel blocks with a combined capacity of 1,600 bed spaces-800 each for male and female students-under a partnership arrangement.
He added that work was also progressing on a new Faculty of Social Sciences complex and a university printing press, both nearing completion as part of broader infrastructure renewal.
Speaking on behalf of host communities, the President-General of Amankanu-Amurri, Mr Victor Okechukwu, said the fencing project had restored peace and accelerated development in the area, enabling smooth site clearing and foundation works.
Similarly, the President-General of Umueze Awkunanaw Community, Mr Okwudiri Ohaa, thanked the governor for prioritising ESUT and pledged continued community support for the project.
Representing the students, Student Union President, Comrade Chizaram Nwodo, described the fencing approval as the fulfilment of a long-standing demand, noting that it would greatly enhance campus security and curb unauthorised access.
She also commended the university management for its focus on student welfare and safety.
