The internal crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) deepened on Wednesday as a factional National Working Committee (NWC), aligned with Nyesom Wike, inaugurated Local Government Area (LGA) Caretaker Committees across all 20 council areas of Lagos State.
The move followed the faction’s earlier dissolution of the party’s state executives in Lagos and other states, a decision that has further fractured the opposition party at the national level.
On December 24, 2025, the same faction inaugurated a 19-member State Caretaker Committee to oversee PDP affairs in Lagos, signaling a parallel power structure within the party.
The Wike-aligned NWC is headed by Alhaji Abdulrahman Mohammed as National Chairman, with Senator Samuel Anyanwu serving as National Secretary.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony in Ikeja, the Deputy National Secretary of the factional NWC, Mr Adedeji Doherty, who represented the national chairman, said the party’s revival must start from the grassroots.
Doherty, a former Lagos PDP chairman and governorship candidate, charged the newly inaugurated Caretaker Committees to rebuild party structures at the ward, zonal, and local government levels.
“This is a special assignment. We must not take it lightly. The rebuilding of PDP must begin from the base, and results are expected,” he said.
He directed the state and LGA Caretaker Committees to immediately commence membership registration and revalidation across wards, zones, and councils, stressing that grassroots mobilisation remained critical to the party’s survival.
Doherty noted that the Caretaker Committees would operate for 60 days, after which congresses would be conducted to elect substantive party executives.
He assured members that their efforts would not be discarded after the congresses, dismissing fears of political marginalisation.
In his remarks, the Lagos State Caretaker Committee Chairman, Mr Kayode Ogunbiyi, urged members to reconnect the party with grassroots supporters and act strictly within the law.
“We need to stand firm so that the party will not collapse. This is an opportunity to rebuild PDP in Lagos,” Ogunbiyi said.
Also speaking, former House of Representatives member, Mr Tajudeen Obasa, expressed optimism that the PDP would overcome its internal challenges and remain competitive in the 2027 general elections.
“PDP is not dead. We are staying in the party, and we will contest and win elections in 2027,” he said.
The event attracted members of the faction’s state Caretaker Committee and former Lagos PDP executives loyal to the group, underscoring the widening divisions within the party.
