The Lagos State Government has disbursed a total of ₦40 million to families of personnel of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) who died while on active duty.

The Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Transportation, Mr Sola Giwa, disclosed this on Wednesday during LASTMA’s financial presentation ceremony held in honour of its fallen officers.

Giwa recalled that during LASTMA’s 25th anniversary celebration on July 15, 2025, the Deputy Governor, Dr Obafemi Hamzat, who represented Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, was deeply moved by accounts of the hazards, sacrifices and challenges faced daily by LASTMA officers.

According to him, the governor subsequently approved a ₦2 million support package for each family of personnel who lost their lives in service.

“The governor made it clear that this support is not a price for a life lost, because no amount can equate the value of human life.

“It is a symbolic expression of the state’s appreciation for duty, courage and sacrifice,” Giwa said.

He explained that the ceremony marked the fulfilment of that promise, following the completion of all required documentation and due process.

Giwa commended the Ministry of Economic Planning and Budget, the Ministry of Transportation, and LASTMA management for ensuring the successful implementation of the initiative.

Addressing the bereaved families, he acknowledged their pain and sacrifice, noting that their loved ones chose service over comfort and Lagos over personal safety.

“To our serving LASTMA officers, you remain the backbone of Lagos traffic management. The governor remains committed to your welfare, reforms and institutional strengthening as we build a safer transport system for over 20 million residents,” he added.

Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transportation, Mr Olawale Musa, described the deceased officers as heroes who paid the ultimate price in the line of duty.

Musa revealed that no fewer than 17 LASTMA officers died in the past year alone, underscoring the dangers faced by traffic officers on Lagos roads.

He cited incidents where officers were stoned or crushed by vehicles while performing their duties, stressing the need for greater public understanding and respect.

Earlier, the General Manager of LASTMA, Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki, said the gathering was to honour the memories of fallen colleagues and show solidarity with their families.

He said the engagement reaffirmed LASTMA’s resolve to improve safety standards, learn from past incidents and work collectively to prevent future tragedies.

A total of 20 families benefited from the ₦40 million support package.
