The Rivers State Police Command has arrested an inspector, Victor Okus, over an alleged shooting that left one police officer dead and another injured in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
The command’s spokesperson, Grace Iringe-Koko, disclosed in a statement on Monday that the suspect, an officer attached to the 17 Police Mobile Force (PMF), was currently in custody.
According to the police, the incident occurred on January 18, 2026, at about 1:20 p.m. at Next Cash and Carry Supermarket in the Trans Amadi area of Port Harcourt.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Okus, who was on special duty at Intels Logistics Company, Onne, allegedly opened fire on his colleagues during a joint guard assignment involving police and military personnel.
One of the victims, Inspector Ibrahim Sani, attached to 14 PMF, Yola, sustained gunshot wounds to the head and neck and later died while receiving treatment at the hospital. Another officer suffered multiple gunshot injuries and is currently undergoing treatment at an undisclosed medical facility.
Police authorities confirmed that the remains of the deceased officer had been deposited at the Military Hospital Mortuary for autopsy and preservation.
Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner of Police in Rivers State, Olugbenga Adepoju, ordered a comprehensive and transparent investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting.
Adepoju stressed that the suspect would undergo an orderly room trial to establish the motive behind the act and would be charged to court if found culpable.
He also warned officers handling firearms to exercise maximum responsibility and professionalism, noting that discipline and safety must never be compromised while on duty.
