Africa’s leading para-badminton player, Eniola Bolaji, claimed gold at the 2026 Egypt International Championship on Sunday at the New Capital Indoor Hall in Cairo.
The Paralympic bronze medallist defeated Turkey’s world number seven, Halime Yildiz, in straight sets, winning 21–10, 21–4 in a one-sided final.
The championship, which ran from January 13 to January 18, attracted para-badminton athletes from 28 countries, underscoring the global depth of the competition.
Bolaji began her campaign with a convincing 2–0 victory over Yildiz before overpowering India’s Tulika Jadgave and Manasi Girishchandra Joshi to reach the semi-finals.
She sealed her place in the final by defeating Shivam Yadav Neeraj 2–0, maintaining complete control throughout the match.
Reacting to the victory, the President of the Badminton Federation of Nigeria, Francis Orbih, praised Bolaji’s consistency and growing international influence.
Orbih said her performances demonstrate Nigeria’s ability to compete and dominate on the global para-badminton stage, expressing confidence that the athlete would enjoy another successful year.
He also commended the federation’s partners, including GIG Logistics and the National Sports Commission, for supporting the development of para sports in the country.
