Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has unveiled a new fleet of environmental sanitation equipment, reinforcing his administration’s resolve to position Enugu as a clean, healthy, and competitive city ready for sustained economic growth.

The newly deployed assets include 10 waste compactors, seven automated road sweepers, and 200 modern 3,000-litre dumpsters designed to improve waste evacuation and street cleanliness across urban centres.

The unveiling ceremony, held at the Old Government Lodge in Enugu on Tuesday, underscored the administration’s broader sustainability agenda and its goal of consolidating Enugu’s status as Nigeria’s model green state.

Represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Professor Chidiebere Onyia, Governor Mbah described the initiative as a strategic investment rather than a routine equipment launch, noting that environmental discipline remains central to the future Enugu vision.

“With the introduction of these modern assets, we are strengthening the backbone of our environmental infrastructure and advancing a development agenda built on cleanliness, order, and sustainability,” he said.

Governor Mbah explained that environmental reform is a key driver of his plan to expand Enugu’s economy from the $4.4 billion inherited in 2023 to $30 billion by 2031.

“A city burdened by waste cannot attract investors, grow tourism, or guarantee public health. That is why a clean Enugu is non-negotiable in our economic strategy,” he stated.

According to the governor, the compactors will accelerate waste evacuation, while the automated sweepers will align Enugu’s streets with global urban standards. The new dumpsters, he added, will curb indiscriminate dumping and ease pressure on existing waste collection points.

Beyond infrastructure, the administration is implementing wide-ranging reforms at the Enugu State Waste Management Agency (ESWAMA), strengthening its operational capacity and enforcing higher service delivery standards.

The government is also expanding public awareness campaigns to promote responsible waste disposal, emphasizing that long-term success depends on citizen cooperation.

Governor Mbah commended the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change and ESWAMA for driving reforms in line with the administration’s environmental vision.

In his remarks, the Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Professor Sam Ugwu, noted that the signing of the Enugu State Environmental Protection Law in 2024, alongside the Climate Change Policy and Action Plan, has significantly improved environmental governance.

Similarly, ESWAMA Managing Director, Richard Onaga, assured residents that the agency would maximize the new assets, describing them as timely interventions amid rapid urban expansion and population growth.

“These assets will enhance efficiency, improve waste collection, and ensure cleaner streets across Enugu’s urban and semi-urban areas,” he said.
