Former Governor of Anambra State, Mr. Peter Obi, on Tuesday led a delegation of prominent Igbo leaders on a New Year homage to elder statesman and former Governor of old Anambra State, Senator Jim Nwobodo.

The visit took place at Nwobodo’s ancestral home in Amechi, Enugu South Local Government Area of Enugu State.

Members of the delegation included Senator Ben Obi, Senator Sam Egwu, Dr Okwesilieze Nwodo, and Senator Gil Nnaji.

Welcoming the visitors, Nwobodo described Obi as a “respectable and widely accepted” leader, urging him to remain steadfast in his pursuit of a better political future for Ndigbo.

He said the Igbo deserved a fairer place in Nigeria, stressing that the contributions of the region to the country’s formation should not be forgotten.

“I am no longer just Jim Nwobodo the politician; I am an elder statesman. That is why you came to see me, and I pray for you,” he said.

Nwobodo recalled the sacrifices of Igbo leaders in Nigeria’s history, expressing hope that one day an Igbo would emerge as President of the country.

Earlier, Obi said the visit was strictly to convey New Year goodwill and prayers for good health and long life to the elder statesman.

“This is not our first visit. We came to wish him a healthy, peaceful, and fruitful New Year. We will return to discuss political matters at another time,” Obi said.

In his remarks, Senator Ben Obi described Nwobodo as the “godfather of South-East politics,” explaining that the visit was an annual tradition rooted in respect and consultation.

He added that a broader delegation would later return to brief Nwobodo on recent political developments involving Mr. Peter Obi.
