The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has reaffirmed its commitment to improving weather forecasting as part of a broader strategy to strengthen national climate resilience in 2026.
The Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Mrs Funke Adebayo-Arowojobe, disclosed this on Tuesday during an interview with journalists in Abuja, noting that the agency would deepen collaboration with relevant institutions to achieve its goals.
According to her, Nigerians should expect clearer and more simplified weather information, stronger early-warning systems, and expanded outreach to rural communities, including road shows and town hall engagements.
She explained that NiMet plans to enhance consumer protection processes and deploy innovative digital tools to improve public access to weather information.
Adebayo-Arowojobe said the agency remains focused on safeguarding lives and property through effective dissemination of weather data, adding that feedback from stakeholders would be critical in improving service delivery in 2026.
She highlighted the importance of tailoring weather information to specific sectors, stressing that forecasts for aviation differ significantly from those required for agriculture, construction, healthcare, humanitarian services, and state governments.
“The segmentation of weather action helps to ensure that adaptation and risk management strategies are relevant to specific hazards, locations, and sectors,” she said.
She noted that NiMet has strengthened the capacity of its forecast communication teams through continuous training, enabling them to translate complex meteorological data into clear and actionable public advisories.
The director also revealed that internal coordination among public relations, commercial, and consumer protection units had been improved, ensuring faster response to public inquiries and better alignment between weather alerts and customer service.
In addition, she said the agency had expanded stakeholder engagement through farmer education programmes, forums, and increased digital presence, while introducing new service standards aimed at improving customer experience.
Adebayo-Arowojobe added that NiMet had entered into several memoranda of understanding with local and international organisations to enhance collaboration and drive progress toward climate resilience in the coming year.
