Kano Police Confirm Murder, Mob Lynching After Mosque Attack
The Nigeria Police Command in Kano State has confirmed the killing of a local resident, identified as Ladan Zubairu, by an unknown assailant at Yusuf Garko Mosque in the Maraba Quarters area of Kano.
The incident was confirmed in a statement issued on Monday by the command’s Public Relations Officer, CSP Abdullahi Kiyawa.
According to Kiyawa, eyewitnesses reported that the suspect fled the scene after the attack but was chased by an angry mob, which later lynched him.
He said the mob also set the suspect’s residence on fire before security operatives intervened.
The police spokesperson explained that normalcy had since been restored in the area, with security personnel deployed to maintain law and order.
Kiyawa disclosed that investigators recovered the victim’s severed throat from the suspect’s pocket, adding that both the victim and the suspect were taken to Mohammed Abdullahi Wase Teaching Hospital in Kano, where they were confirmed dead and await autopsy.
He quoted the Commissioner of Police in the state, Ibrahim Bakori, as having ordered a thorough investigation into the incident to ensure that all those involved are brought to justice.
The police appealed to residents to remain calm and cooperate with law-enforcement agencies as investigations continue.
“Citizens with any information that may assist the investigation are urged to report to the nearest police station. All information will be treated confidentially,” Kiyawa said.
The command reiterated its commitment to safeguarding lives and property across Kano and warned against mob actions, stressing that such acts undermine the rule of law.
