Governor Dapo Abiodun has presented a N1.66 trillion 2026 budget to the Ogun State House of Assembly for consideration and approval. The proposal, titled the “Budget of Sustainable Legacy,” was laid before lawmakers on Wednesday at the Assembly Complex in Abeokuta.

The governor explained that the estimate comprises N1.044 trillion, representing 63 percent, for capital expenditure and N624.76 billion, or 37 percent, for recurrent expenditure. He added that personnel costs stand at N167.92 billion, public debt charges at N99.98 billion, and overhead costs at N291.06 billion.

Abiodun revealed that the state expects to generate N250 billion through the Ogun State Internal Revenue Service (OGIRS) and N259.88 billion from other Ministries, Departments and Agencies, bringing total IGR to N509.88 billion. He also projected N554.81 billion from federal allocations, including FAAC revenue, VAT, and other shared funds.

Capital receipts are estimated at N518.90 billion, which include internal and external loans and grants. Providing a sectoral breakdown, the governor stated that infrastructure would take N526.15 billion (32 percent), while education is allocated N275 billion (17 percent). The health sector is set to receive N210.59 billion (13 percent), and housing and community development will get N166.96 billion (10 percent). Agriculture and industry are allocated N40.54 billion, representing two percent.

Recreation, culture and religion are earmarked for N42.24 billion (three percent), while N72.82 billion (four percent) is set aside for social protection programmes.

Abiodun emphasised that despite economic pressures, his administration remains committed to strengthening the state’s economy, empowering citizens and maintaining inclusive growth. He noted that Ogun remains one of Nigeria’s top contributors to non-oil revenues and continues to demonstrate “fiscal resilience, policy stability and administrative innovation.”

“Ogun remains one of the top three industrial states in Nigeria and one of the largest contributors to the non-oil revenue, nationally,” he said.

Speaker of the House, Oludaisi Elemide, assured the governor of the legislature’s support and pledged a thorough but swift passage of the 2026 budget, reaffirming cooperation among all branches of government.

It will be recalled that Abiodun presented a N1.055 trillion budget for the 2025 fiscal year. The submission of the new proposal places the 2026 budget at a significantly higher threshold, reflecting the administration’s expanded development goals.
