The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed that six people lost their lives on Friday night following a fatal collision involving a truck and a commercial bus along the Awka–Onitsha expressway. The accident occurred near the Nawfia axis close to the Enugu-Agidi junction and resulted in a tragic Crash that authorities say was entirely avoidable.
Anambra State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Mrs. Bridget Asekhauno, told journalists in Awka that the crash was caused by reckless driving. The incident involved a yellow and black tipper with registration number FGG21XV and a red bus registered as XQ398AA. According to eyewitnesses, the bus was travelling from Ebonyi to Onitsha after a Catholic Women Organisation burial. The driver reportedly attempted a dangerous overtaking manoeuvre in an effort to regain lost time, leading to a head-on collision with the oncoming truck.
Thirty-two passengers were on board: nine men and twenty-three women. The fatal Crash claimed the lives of two men and four women, while five women sustained injuries. Twenty-one others escaped unhurt. All victims were transported to Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu Teaching Hospital, Amaku, where medical personnel confirmed the deaths.
FRSC operatives immediately cleared the wreckage, restoring free traffic flow along the major expressway. Asekhauno described the event as a preventable tragedy linked to impatience and poor judgement on the road. She urged motorists to obey traffic rules, avoid aggressive overtaking, and prioritise safety at all times to prevent further incidents like the Awka–Onitsha Crash.
The FRSC extended condolences to the affected families and reaffirmed its commitment to strict enforcement of traffic regulations, enhanced road safety campaigns, and timely response during emergencies across Anambra and beyond.
