In a bold reaffirmation of his commitment to purposeful leadership, former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has addressed the rising agitation surrounding his pledge to serve only a single term of four years if elected President of Nigeria. Obi, known for his disciplined approach to governance and frugal leadership style, said it was “baffling” that Nigerians were skeptical about achieving transformative results within just 48 months. “By this feeling, we are doubting the fact that a sincere leader can achieve much in 48 months,” Obi stated, insisting that what is needed is not time, but sincerity of purpose.

Obi debunked the narrative of desperation often associated with many politicians in Nigeria. “I have never been desperate in the pursuit of power, or anything else, for that matter,” he said. According to him, desperate politicians typically exhibit traits such as aggressive rhetoric, paranoia in the face of criticism, and a tendency to make unrealistic promises. “These are not my political behaviours – past or present,” he added, describing himself as someone driven not by personal ambition but by a deep commitment to see Nigeria work.

The former governor stressed that his political history has been free of violence or underhanded tactics. “Throughout my political journey, I have never been involved in thuggery, the snatching of ballot boxes, or any form of electoral malpractice,” he declared. “Conduct your investigations. You will find no stains of rigging or violence associated with my name.” He challenged critics and political observers to review his record, asserting that he has always chosen the path of civility, fair competition, and democratic engagement.

Reacting to Obi’s latest remarks, Dr. Kemi Ogundipe, a political sociologist at the University of Ibadan, lauded his insistence on clean politics. “In a climate where political violence and manipulation are often normalized, Peter Obi’s stance is refreshing. His willingness to run a fair race, and even limit himself to a single term, is a testament to his belief in institutional integrity over personal power,” she said. Dr. Ogundipe added that Obi’s track record in Anambra shows that he is capable of delivering within tight timelines if given national support.

Obi highlighted key priority areas his administration would tackle if elected, notably corruption, wasteful spending, and the rule of law. “In four years, we can confront corruption head-on, redirecting resources to priority areas,” he explained, citing the example of “trillions used to acquire new presidential jets” that could have been better invested in education, healthcare, and infrastructure. According to him, under his watch, “the rule will be sacrosanct and the rule of law strictly followed,” laying the groundwork for credible and transparent governance.

Speaking in support of the single-term proposal, Comrade Ahmed Tijjani, a Kaduna-based youth activist, remarked, “What Obi is offering is a service-focused contract, not a lifetime appointment. Four years is long enough to lay the foundation for a new Nigeria if the leader is committed and not distracted by thoughts of re-election.” He urged other candidates to consider making similar pledges to renew public trust in democratic leadership.

Capping his statement, Obi noted, “Leadership, to me, is not about entitlement. It is about service.” He emphasized that if given the mandate, he would devote every moment of his four-year term to building a functional and inclusive Nigeria. With the 2027 elections on the horizon, his position is already reshaping public discourse, challenging the culture of endless political tenure and reinforcing the possibility of short-term, high-impact leadership.
