•••Caretaker Committee inaugurated to restore order amid land disputes and leadership breakdown
After months of internal strife, conflicting leadership claims, and development disputes that hampered communal harmony in Akpuoga-Nike, Enugu East Local Government Area, calm is returning. The Enugu State Government has taken decisive steps to restore order by inaugurating a caretaker committee to oversee the affairs of Akpuoga-Nike Development Union until a properly constituted leadership emerges.
The caretaker committee was officially inaugurated on Friday, July 11, by the State Commissioner for Rural Development, Deacon Okey Ogbodo. The move, government officials say, is a proactive response to the growing instability within the community and a commitment to preserving peace and progress in line with Governor Peter Mbah’s broader agenda of grassroots transformation and rural development.
At the heart of this turnaround effort is the Executive Chairman of Enugu East Local Government Area, Hon. Beloved-Dan Anike, who played pivotal role in resolving tensions that had paralyzed community leadership. His intervention, marked by quiet consultations with elders, youth groups, and stakeholders, helped build consensus on the need for a transitional leadership body.
“We couldn’t fold our hands while internal strife eroded our people’s trust in their leaders and jeopardized ongoing development,” Hon. Anike told GMTNewsng. “This intervention was necessary to provide stability and open the door for reconciliation and future elections.”
The newly installed caretaker committee, led by Engr. Greg Nnaji, has already moved swiftly to clarify its mandate. Speaking to journalists after the committee’s inaugural meeting, Engr. Nnaji stressed that no individual or group outside the committee is authorized to act on behalf of the Akpuoga-Nike Development Union for now. He urged all residents, developers, and business interests to route all matters concerning land, development projects, or community representation through the committee for the sake of transparency and order. He also advised anyone who had previously engaged with the former leadership to come forward with relevant documents for proper reconciliation.
“This is not about taking sides,” Nnaji said. “Our task is to create a neutral ground where trust can be rebuilt and decisions can reflect the collective interest of Akpuoga-Nike.”
In recent years, Akpuoga-Nike had become a flashpoint of tension due to rival leadership factions and disputes over land and development permissions. These disagreements often disrupted peace and derailed infrastructure projects meant to benefit the larger community. With the installation of the caretaker committee, many residents now see an opportunity for a new beginning.
A local business operator who requested anonymity noted that the intervention couldn’t have come at a better time. “Communities thrive when there’s clarity, not confusion,” he said. “It’s good to see that the government is taking practical steps to get things right again.”
The intervention also aligns with Governor Peter Mbah’s stated vision of building strong local institutions, promoting participatory governance, and ensuring peace across the state’s rural communities. From resolving intra-community disputes to establishing a culture of inclusive dialogue, the Mbah administration has consistently made peace and stability foundational elements of its “Tomorrow is Here” governance philosophy.
“Speaking during the inauguration of the committee, which includes Mr. Henry Nnam as Secretary, Mr. Lawrence Okoh, Hon. Donatus Anike, and Hon. Donatus Nnamani as members, Commissioner Ogbodo noted that the establishment of the caretaker committee is a corrective measure designed to usher in transparency and institutional order. “No one is above the community,” he said. “We’re simply helping Akpuoga-Nike reset and prepare for a more inclusive leadership system.”
The committee, for its part, has called on all residents to cooperate fully and avoid any engagements with unauthorized individuals or factions who may claim to represent the community. While setting a clear agenda for fresh elections, the immediate priority remains rebuilding trust, restoring coordination, and fostering a more harmonious environment for development to flourish.
The events in Akpuoga-Nike are a reminder that peaceful and united communities stand a better chance of attracting development, maintaining security, and giving voice to all stakeholders. With the combined efforts of the state government, the Enugu East council, and the cooperation of residents, Akpuoga-Nike is now poised to move past its divisions and focus on building a future rooted in peace, accountability, and shared purpose.
