Biden Honors Six Diaspora Nigerians with Prestigious PECASE Award; Tinubu Commends Their Achievements

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated six distinguished Nigerians in the diaspora who were among the 400 recipients of the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE). This prestigious honor, announced by U.S. President Joe Biden on January 14, 2025, is the highest recognition the U.S. government bestows on early-career scientists and engineers for groundbreaking contributions to their fields.

The PECASE, established in 1996 by former President Bill Clinton, celebrates exceptional innovation and research in the early stages of scientists’ and engineers’ careers. This year’s awardees, supported by 14 U.S. government agencies, reflect global excellence and a commitment to advancing science and engineering for societal progress.

Six Nigerians shone brightly among the honorees. They include Azeez Butali, Gilbert Lilly Endowed Professor at the University of Iowa; Ijeoma Opara, Associate Professor at Yale University; and Oluwatomi Akindele, a postdoctoral researcher at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Others are Eno Ebong, Associate Professor of Chemical Engineering at Northeastern University; Oluwasanmi Koyejo, Assistant Professor at Stanford University; and Abidemi Ajiboye, Executive Vice Chair at Case Western Reserve University.

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu praised the honorees for their exceptional accomplishments. “The recognition of these talented Nigerians underscores our nation’s capacity to produce global trailblazers in science, technology, and engineering. Their achievements are a source of inspiration for Nigerians at home and abroad,” the statement read.

President Tinubu also expressed hope that the awardees would use their expertise to contribute to Nigeria’s development under his administration’s “Renewed Hope Agenda.” “I urge them to bring their knowledge and innovation to support our collective national goals. Together, we can transform Nigeria through science, research, and technology,” he emphasized.

Commenting on the honorees’ achievements, Dr. Obinna Okonkwo, a Nigerian-born scientist based in the United States, remarked, “This recognition is proof that Nigerian talent knows no boundaries. It is a wake-up call for young Nigerians to believe in their potential and aspire to excellence in their chosen fields.”

Similarly, Professor Adebayo Adeyemi, an educator and mentor to many young scientists, lauded the recipients, stating, “These awards highlight the importance of fostering innovation. Nigeria’s youth should see this as evidence that their dreams are achievable with hard work and dedication.”

The recognition of these six Nigerians serves as a beacon of hope and a rallying cry for young people in the country. President Tinubu encouraged the youth to view these honorees as role models, emphasizing that their achievements demonstrate the global relevance of Nigerian talent and innovation.

As these scientists and engineers continue to make groundbreaking contributions on the global stage, their success reinforces the need for Nigeria to invest in education, research, and technological advancement. Their achievements are not just personal milestones but a testament to the boundless potential of Nigerians worldwide. GMTNewsng
