In a flurry of telephone interviews yesterday, Ben Etiaba, a former governorship candidate in Anambra State and son of Nigeria’s only female governor, Dame Virgy Etiaba, put to rest speculations about his political ambitions. Speaking to journalists and members of his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), Etiaba firmly stated that he would not be contesting in the 2025 Anambra governorship race. However, his decision to step aside came with a powerful endorsement.
Later in the evening, during a live interview on Afia TV’s Eastern Eye program, Etiaba took the opportunity to publicly back Hon. Sir Azuka Okwuosa for the APC ticket. “Azuka’s political pedigree is unrivalled, and he will be a listening governor who will lead for the many and not for the few, if by His Grace he emerges APC’s choice at the primaries next March and wins the November 2025 election,” Etiaba declared emphatically.
Etiaba praised Okwuosa’s qualities, emphasizing his humility, deep knowledge of the state’s issues, and political sagacity. “Leadership demands humility, experience, and a deep understanding of the people’s challenges. Azuka Okwuosa is the embodiment of these traits, a man of great political gravitas and humility personified,” Etiaba added.
He further described Okwuosa as a man of sound judgment and intelligent decision-making, qualities he believes are indispensable for the leadership Anambra State needs. “I have no doubt that Azuka possesses the wisdom to make solid choices for the betterment of our people. His tenure will set a new standard for governance in Anambra,” Etiaba said.
Okwuosa’s credentials as an experienced politician and administrator were also highlighted by Etiaba. With several executive and appointive positions under his belt, Okwuosa has demonstrated an ability to deliver results. Etiaba argued that by 2025, as it remains Anambra South’s turn to govern, Okwuosa stands head and shoulders above other contenders. “Azuka is a bridge-builder who understands the intricacies of governance. He is the leader Anambra needs,” Etiaba stated.
Other endorsements have also begun to roll in. Prof. Gabriel Onyekwelu, remarked, “It’s clear that Sir Azuka has both the experience and temperament needed to steer Anambra in the right direction.” Another political analyst, Dr. Nkechi Nwankwo, noted, “Okwuosa’s governance style would resonate with the people. His extensive track record speaks volumes about his readiness to serve.”
However, some observers expressed disappointment that Etiaba is not running. Former legislator Chief Ikedi Umeadi said, “It would have been wonderful to see Ben Etiaba contest again. His unique qualities and his heritage as the son of Dame Virgy Etiaba would have made him a formidable candidate. Still, his endorsement of Azuka Okwuosa is a testament to his selflessness and commitment to the Igbo renaissance.”
Etiaba himself reiterated his dedication to the Igbo cause. “I remain fully committed to advocating for the Igbo renaissance—politically, economically, and culturally. My support for Azuka is rooted in my belief that he shares this vision and has the capacity to actualize it,” he concluded.
With Etiaba’s influential endorsement, the race for the Anambra governorship takes a decisive turn, positioning Hon. Sir Azuka Okwuosa as a strong contender for the APC ticket and possibly the governorship itself. GMTNewsng
