The Enugu State Government has applauded the Republic of Finland for arresting Simon Ekpa, the Finland-based leader of the proscribed Autopilot group, describing him as a con artist, terrorist, and a criminal with no genuine interest in the Igbo people. The government expressed confidence that his trial would restore peace and stability to the South-East region, which has long suffered from his destabilizing actions.
In a statement issued by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, the Enugu State Government labeled Ekpa a murderer and fraudster, who profits from the misery of his people. The government emphasized its willingness to provide evidence of atrocities allegedly sponsored by Ekpa against Ndigbo, whether the trial occurs in Finland or Nigeria. “Simon Ekpa thrives on creating a siege mentality, exploiting his people under the guise of fighting for their interests,” Onyia remarked.
According to Onyia, Ekpa’s activities have eroded the South-East’s entrepreneurial spirit and disrupted livelihoods. “His propaganda and destructive campaigns have not only claimed lives but have also devastated properties and businesses in the region,” Onyia added. He further commended Governor Peter Mbah’s administration for consistently pushing for Ekpa’s apprehension and justice for the victims of his alleged crimes.
Reacting to the arrest, a Lagos-based security expert, Dr. Emeka Umeh, described the development as “a step forward in curbing terrorism in the South-East.” He highlighted that Ekpa’s influence had fueled insecurity, and his trial would serve as a deterrent to others engaging in similar activities.
A prominent Igbo cultural advocate, Chief Nduka Eze, lauded Finland’s commitment to international cooperation in combating global criminality. “Ekpa’s arrest is a testament to the power of collaboration between nations in ensuring justice for victims and holding perpetrators accountable,” Eze said. He also urged South-East leaders to unite in addressing the underlying issues that enable such figures to gain traction.
Civil rights activist Mrs. Ngozi Okafor also welcomed the arrest, calling it “a victory for peace in Igboland.” She expressed optimism that the trial would unveil the extent of Ekpa’s network and provide closure for families affected by his alleged actions. “This is a chance to end the cycle of violence and rebuild trust in the region,” she stated.
The Enugu State Government reaffirmed its readiness to cooperate with international authorities in prosecuting Ekpa. It urged Ndigbo to distance themselves from divisive elements and remain committed to Governor Peter Mbah’s vision of peace, unity, and development in the South-East. GMTNewsng
