The Apostolic Nuncio to Nigeria, Most Rev. Michael Francis Crotty, officiated the Mass today, marking Day 11 of the ongoing Bigard Memorial Seminary Centenary celebration. Speaking to journalists, he highlighted the theme of the celebration as “Thanksgiving,” emphasizing the blessings God has bestowed on the Church in Nigeria over the past century. He acknowledged the prominent Cardinals, Archbishops, Bishops, and priests who were formed at Bigard, describing the occasion as an opportunity not only to reflect on the past but also to plan for the future.

“The Holy Father’s message to the seminarians and the Church in Nigeria is one of hope and renewal,” the Apostolic Nuncio stated. “Nigeria is the most important Catholic country in Africa. Wherever you go in the world, you find Nigerians. Let them always bring their faith with them, sharing God’s gifts with others.” He encouraged Nigerians to rejoice in their faith and embrace it as a blessing to be shared globally.

The Rector of Bigard Memorial Seminary, Very Rev. Fr. Albert Ikpenwa, underscored the institution’s commitment to honoring God’s creation through a centenary tree-planting initiative. “God created the world and everything that is alive. Here at Bigard, we have a tradition of maintaining everything that is alive. Planting trees during this celebration symbolizes our stewardship of God’s creation,” Fr. Albert said.

Bishop Godfrey Igwebuike Onah, an alumnus of Bigard, reflected on the transformative impact of the seminary on his life. “I studied here for four years, and I thank God for what I gained,” he said. Comparing the leadership challenges in parts of Nigeria today with the values inculcated at Bigard, he remarked, “It is heartwarming that a place like Bigard exists. Nigeria should learn from Bigard and its leaders, as it is not only priests who have been nurtured here.”

As part of the celebration, attendees witnessed a centenary tree-planting ceremony performed by Most Rev Michael Francis Crotty, the premiere of a Bigard documentary film, and an awards presentation to distinguished alumni. These events showcased the seminary’s rich history and its contribution to the Catholic Church and society at large.

A key highlight of the day was an interactive session between seminarians and Mr. Peter Obi, a former governor of Anambra State. The session offered the seminarians insights into leadership and the integration of faith in public life. Mr. Obi shared practical advice and encouraged them to uphold the values instilled in them at Bigard.

The Bigard Centenary celebration continues to draw attention to the pivotal role the seminary has played in shaping leaders and promoting Catholic values. With a focus on thanksgiving and renewal, the event has become a beacon of hope for the Church and the nation.
