ENUGU, November 10, 2024 – The Metropolitan Archbishop of Onitsha, His Eminence Valerian Okeke, delivered a stirring homily today at the opening Mass of Bigard Memorial Seminary’s centenary celebrations, urging the faithful to deepen their sense of unity and service to the community. Speaking at the revered institution in Enugu, the Archbishop emphasized Bigard Seminary’s legacy in shaping the nation’s moral and spiritual landscape, commending its century-long dedication to raising devoted clergy. His message underscored a collective call to embrace faith, peace, and responsibility, fostering a more cohesive society.

During his homily, Archbishop Okeke described Bigard Seminary as a “sanctuary of faith and leadership,” underscoring its mission amid present-day challenges. “Bigard is not only a house of learning but a sanctuary where faith is strengthened and leaders are molded,” he said. He praised the seminary’s contributions to the Catholic faith in Nigeria and urged seminarians to uphold humility, resilience, and dedication to their calling. Among the gathered faithful were high-ranking clergy, seminarians, and laypeople deeply moved by the Archbishop’s words.
Following the Mass, Archbishop Okeke inaugurated the newly constructed Centenary Hostel, a significant addition to Bigard’s infrastructure. The hostel, built in celebration of the seminary’s 100-year milestone, is designed to support the growing number of seminarians and provide them with an enriched living and learning environment. The Archbishop blessed the hostel, expressing hope that it would foster a deeper sense of community, faith, and purpose among its residents.

Representing the Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Mbah, the Commissioner for Local Governments and Chieftaincy Affairs, Deacon Okey Ogbodo, conveyed the state’s warm felicitations to Bigard on reaching its centenary. Deacon Ogbodo highlighted Governor Mbah’s appreciation of Bigard Seminary’s invaluable role in nurturing moral leadership, underscoring the government’s commitment to supporting religious institutions that positively shape society. He also assured that the administration’s policies would continue to align with the values that Bigard has championed over the years.
The Mass marks the beginning of a series of events scheduled to commemorate the seminary’s centenary, with highlights including symposium from November 13 to 15, featuring renowned speakers such as Francis Cardinal Arinze, Mr. Peter Obi, and Professor Bart Nnaji. Archbishop Okeke encouraged active participation in these events, inviting the faithful to engage deeply with discussions on faith, ethics, and the future of leadership in Nigeria. He emphasized that this milestone calls for both introspection and commitment to the values Bigard has nurtured.
The centenary celebration of Bigard Seminary promises to be a momentous occasion, highlighting its profound impact over the past 100 years.
