Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has launched significant efforts to revitalize the long-neglected Port Harcourt Tourist Beach, aiming to transform it into a premier hub for arts, culture, and tourism activities. The Governor highlighted key initiatives, including extensive sandfilling of the area’s swampy sections and securing an experienced investor committed to turning the beach into a modern tourist destination. These updates were outlined in a press release issued Tuesday, October 29, 2024, and signed by Nelson Chukwudi, Chief Press Secretary to the Rivers State Governor.

During an inspection visit to the Port Harcourt Tourist Beach on Tuesday, Governor Fubara assessed the ongoing sandfilling project and outlined the broader vision for the location, situated off Churchill Road in downtown Port Harcourt, near the Borokiri axis. Accompanied by Commissioner of Culture and Tourism Hon. Israel Ngbuelo, the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary Ishmael Tomonialadieokuma, and Mr. Alozie Nwala, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Lands, Governor Fubara expressed his commitment to restoring this historical site for future generations.

“So, part of our programme for the Rivers people and to bring back Rivers State to what it used to be before is to make sure that we revive the Port Harcourt Tourist Beach,” said Governor Fubara. “What I came to do this afternoon is to inspect the second part of the land, which we just acquired recently to expand this space. And we also have an investor who is willing and has the capacity to re-establish this place as a modern tourist centre. I am really happy that our people are already excited that the once forgotten Port Harcourt Tourist Beach will come back to life.”

The Governor called on local youths to cooperate with contractors and the incoming investor to ensure the smooth execution of the project, urging them to support rather than hinder these revitalization efforts. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to enhancing quality of life for all residents, positioning Rivers State as a leading destination for tourism and peaceful relaxation.

Commenting on the project’s potential impact, cultural historian Dr. Olusegun Olumide emphasized, “The revitalization of Port Harcourt Tourist Beach is not only a revival of a community landmark but also a critical step in preserving our cultural heritage and enhancing economic growth through tourism. This will serve as an invaluable educational resource for future generations and strengthen the local economy.”

Renowned hospitality expert Ms. Amara Obi also lauded the initiative, stating, “Governor Fubara’s actions demonstrate a forward-thinking approach to tourism that prioritizes local collaboration. Reviving the beach will create jobs, attract visitors, and inject vibrancy into the state’s tourism industry, making Rivers State a prime destination for travelers in Nigeria and beyond.” GMTNewsng
