Former President Muhammadu Buhari has extended his congratulations to the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the newly elected Governor of Edo State, Senator Monday Okpebholo, lauding what he described as a “prized, historic electoral victory.”
Buhari expressed optimism that the leaders of both the winning and losing parties would collaborate to further strengthen democracy and continue the development of the state.
In his message, Buhari stated, “Congratulations to the APC and the election winner, Senator Monday Okpebholo, on the historic electoral victory, and my warmest wishes for a new lease of life for Edo State and its people.”
Senator Monday Okpebholo, often referred to as “Akpakomiza,” is a seasoned politician and businessman who has built a reputation for empowering the grassroots in Edo Central. His strong connection to his constituents and his work in infrastructural development played a key role in his electoral success. As a former senator, Okpebholo’s leadership style is widely regarded as practical, with a focus on tangible projects that improve the daily lives of the people.
The Edo State election was fiercely contested, with APC reclaiming the governorship seat after a keenly watched race. Observers praised the election for its relatively peaceful conduct, although there were reports of intense political rivalry. Okpebholo’s victory signals a shift in Edo’s political landscape, marking the APC’s return to power in a state previously governed by the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
Buhari added, “I very much hope the winners and the losers will work together to strengthen democracy and maintain the trajectory of development in the state.”
The former president also commended the law enforcement agencies for their role in ensuring a peaceful election process and praised the efforts of the election officials.
“I commend the law enforcement agencies for the efforts that they put into ensuring a peaceful election, and the multitude of election officials who strive to improve with each election,” Buhari remarked.
He concluded by expressing his hopes for Nigeria’s democratic progress, stating, “I pray that Nigeria, the continent’s most populous country, will continue to achieve remarkable progress under democracy.” GMTNewsng
