Borno – Severe flooding in Maiduguri, Borno State, triggered by the failure of the Alau Dam, led to a prison break on Tuesday. An unconfirmed number of inmates escaped from the city’s custodial facility after rising waters breached security barriers and weakened the structure.

“The flooding took everyone by surprise, and the prison’s defenses were compromised. We are doing everything we can to assess the damage and secure the remaining inmates,” said a senior official from the Maiduguri Custodial Centre.

Authorities have confirmed that the escapees are highly dangerous and may be armed, posing a significant threat to public safety in a region already grappling with insurgency. A manhunt is currently underway, with law enforcement agencies mobilizing additional resources to track down the escapees. “We are working around the clock, in coordination with local law enforcement, to ensure these fugitives are recaptured as swiftly as possible,” said Borno State Police Command.

This incident comes just two years after the attack on the Kuje Medium Custodial Centre in the Federal Capital Territory, where over 400 inmates, including several terrorists, escaped. Despite ongoing efforts, many of those escapees remain at large, a stark reminder of the challenges facing Nigeria’s correctional system. “The failure to recapture the Kuje escapees highlights critical gaps in our security infrastructure. We cannot afford a repeat of such events, especially with dangerous criminals on the loose,” warned Jeffery Ogor, a security analyst based in Abuja.

The situation has intensified concern in Maiduguri, a city already struggling with the pressures of insurgency and instability. Authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity as the search for the escaped inmates continues.
