The Southeast Zone of the Electricity Consumers of Nigeria (ECAN) has issued a warning against “emergency electricity activists,” cautioning the public to be wary of them. According to Engr Joe Ubani, the ECAN zonal chairman, and Comrade Chris Okpara, the secretary, these activists are “not committed to the common good but to their own pockets.”
They accused a former commissioner from the Abia State government (name withheld) of leading a group of four individuals attempting to incite people against the new Alex Oti government under the guise of being electricity activists. The ECAN leaders stated, “This tiny clique of disgruntled and discredited politicians in Abia State has no record of honest public service, let alone altruistic civic engagement.”
“They are emergency activists, not activists, who have neither personal nor professional reputation to protect. No one knows any of them in the highly specialized electricity sector, which is currently facing turbulence across Nigeria.”
ECAN expressed that these politicians are unhappy with the success of the Oti administration in endearing itself to the Abia people through people-oriented actions and programs, particularly in road development. They mentioned that the leader of this group was responsible for the Ministry of Works and left a legacy of neglected roads.
ECAN optimistically anticipated a new phase of rapid development in Abia, particularly when the Geometric Power group starts operating its three turbines in the Osisioma Industrial Layout in Aba, each producing 47 megawatts.
The association revealed that in preparation for the launch of Aba Power, which aims to provide uninterrupted, reliable, safe, and affordable public power supply, several foreign and local companies, including Nemeith Pharmaceuticals plc, are relocating their manufacturing operations to Aba.
Furthermore, ECAN mentioned that history-changing projects like the Enyimba Economic City, a joint venture between Nigerian and Chinese business leaders, will benefit from Aba Power’s support, facilitating their success.
ECAN commended the Abia people for ignoring the former commissioner and his group. GMTNews
