Excerpts:

The Bigard Main Chapel

GMTNewsng: Who is Rev. Fr. Dr. Albert Okechukwu Ikpenwa and for how long have you been a priest?

Father Rector: My name is Reverend. Father. Albert Okechukwu Ikpenwa, and I am pleased to welcome you the GMTNews crew to Bigard for this interview. Thank you for taking the time to visit.

To answer your question, my journey began in Ndeaboh, where I was born on January 29, 1967, as the third son of Igwe and Lolo Albert Umezurike Ikpenwa. Growing up in Ndeaboh, I attended Central School for my primary education before moving on to Marist Brothers Juniorate Uturu for my secondary school years from 1980 to 1985.

After completing my secondary education, I applied to the Bishop of Enugu, Rt Rev. Michael Ugwuja Eneja, and was accepted as a seminarian for the Enugu Diocese. I spent one year doing Apostolic Work at Catholic Secretariat Enugu, after which I pursued philosophical studies at Seat of Wisdom Seminary Owerri from 1987 to 1991. Following my philosophical studies, I served as the administrator of Mother of Mercy Hospital Ihe, Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu State, for a year.

“In terms of spiritual formation, students focus on developing their prayer life, devotion, sacramental participation, and a deep relationship with God. Academic formation highlights the importance of knowledge, drawing from the biblical passage Hosea 4:6, which states “my people perish for lack of knowledge.” Human formation aims to cultivate psychological balance, good interpersonal skills, a spirit of charity, forgiveness, and the integration of cardinal virtues such as temperance, justice, courage, and prudence. Pastoral formation involves gaining practical experience in parish and apostolic work”.

Students praying in Ave Maria Groto

In 1992, I embarked on my theological studies at Bigard Memorial Seminary Enugu, which lasted until 1996 when I was ordained as a priest on August 24th by Bishop Michael Ugwuja Eneja.

Since my ordination in 1996, I have had the opportunity to work in various locations within and outside of Nigeria. I served as the assistant parish priest of Sacred Heart Parish, Uwani, and later as the Financial Administrator of Bigard Memorial Seminary, Enugu.

In 2001, I was given the privilege to further my studies in Rome, where I pursued Masters and Decorate degree programs with a specialization in Moral Theology. Following my studies, I spent eight rewarding years at Sankt Maria Pfarrei Simbach am Inn in Germany before returning to Nigeria in 2012 to join the dedicated staff of Bigard Memorial Seminary, Enugu.

This provides you with a summary of who I am and the path that has led me to where I am today.

GMTNewsng: Thank you for that elaborate journey into your career, Fr. According to the Vatican Media (10th Nov. 2022), while talking to some African Bishops, His Holiness Pope Francis said that “the formation of priests is fundamental for the future of Africa”.

Academic block

Could you kindly throw more light on the formative structure of the seminary that makes it a hope for the future of the African society and Church?

Father Rector: The essence of every seminary is the formation of candidates for the priesthood, which involves shaping them according to the teachings of Christ and the Church. Bigard Memorial Seminary has been fulfilling this task since its establishment in 1924, following a well-defined approach. The formation period at Bigard consists of three stages: the propaedeutic, the discipleship, and the configuration stages.

During the propaedeutic stage, students are introduced to basic spirituality, the lives of the saints, prayers, and the fundamental teachings of the Church. In the discipleship stage, they delve into various branches of philosophy. Lastly, in the configuration stage, they study different branches of theology. Throughout all these stages, emphasis is placed on four key areas of formation: spiritual, academic, human, and pastoral formation.

In terms of spiritual formation, students focus on developing their prayer life, devotion, sacramental participation, and a deep relationship with God. Pastoral formation involves gaining practical experience in parish and apostolic work.

All these areas of formation prepare candidates to serve the Church and humanity at various levels. Only after completing this rigorous formation process can candidates be entrusted with responsibilities such as pastoral ministries, teaching, managing schools and hospitals, and contributing to community development.

Father Rector

The importance of seminary formation in Africa is affirmed by the apostolic letter “Maximum Illud,” issued by Pope Benedict XV on November 30, 1919. In this letter, the Pope emphasized the necessity of training indigenous priests to take over the work of evangelization in their own countries. Pope Francis echoes this sentiment by emphasizing the pivotal role of seminary formation in shaping the future of the Church in Africa.

GMTNewsng: In the Post-synodal Apostolic Exhortation on the formation of priests in the circumstances of the present day (Pastores dabo vobis), Saint John Paul II said that the life and ministry of the priest must also “adapt to every era and circumstance of life” (n. 5). Could you kindly elaborate on this?

Father Rector: The Post-Synodal Apostolic Exhortation, with its focus on the four areas of formation – spiritual, academic, human, and pastoral – further reinforces the importance of these aspects in the development of candidates for the priesthood. This document serves as a guide for seminaries and provides valuable insights into nurturing holistic formation.

Regarding spiritual formation, the Exhortation emphasizes the crucial role of cultivating a deep spiritual life. Seminarians are encouraged to develop a robust prayer life, engage in regular sacramental participation, foster devotion to the saints, and cultivate a personal relationship with God. The formation process should provide ample opportunities for spiritual growth and lead candidates to a profound sense of communion with the Divine.

In terms of academic formation, the Exhortation underscores the necessity of intellectual enrichment. Seminarians are called to deepen their understanding of theology, philosophy, and other relevant disciplines. Through a rigorous academic curriculum, candidates develop their theological knowledge and analytical thinking skills, equipping them to engage critically with the challenges of their future ministry.

Human formation, as highlighted in the Exhortation, acknowledges the importance of psychological well-being and personal growth. Seminarians are encouraged to develop emotional intelligence, authentic relationships, and a genuine concern for others. They should strive to embody virtues such as patience, compassion, humility, and cultural sensitivity. The formation process should provide opportunities for self-reflection, counselling, and mentorship to foster personal integration and maturity.

“…the seminary formation process, while focusing on spiritual, academic, human, and pastoral formation, prepares priests to undertake their essential functions as teachers, sanctifiers, and leaders in the community. Through their involvement in community-building efforts and engagement with various societal sectors, they contribute to the betterment of society and fulfill their role as ambassadors of Christ.

The Exhortation’s emphasis on pastoral formation recognizes the practical dimension of priestly ministry. Seminarians are called to gain hands-on experience in serving the community, engaging in pastoral work, and learning effective leadership and pastoral skills. This includes exposure to parish life, evangelization efforts, ministry to marginalized groups, and practical training in sacraments, counselling, and pastoral care.

Overall, the Post-Synodal Apostolic Exhortation underscores the significance of an integrated approach to formation for candidates for the priesthood. It emphasizes the interplay between spiritual depth, intellectual proficiency, psychological well-being, and practical skills. By addressing these four areas comprehensively, seminaries can ensure that future priests are well-prepared to carry out their vocation faithfully and effectively, serving the Church and society with compassion, knowledge, and pastoral care.

GMTNewsng: In his book The Trouble with Nigeria, Chinua Achebe accuses bad leadership as the bane of the Nigerian nation.

Nov. 14, 2019 Centenary celebration kickoff.

Do you agree that it is among the tasks of the seminary, to help form priests that would help in the breeding of the new democratic and God-fearing leaders to help salvage the nation from poverty and avoid the present Niger experience, if so, are priests of today being trained in this direction?

Father Rector: As the Rector, I find it deeply regrettable that our country has suffered from poor leadership, resulting in the current state of affairs. As a priest and community builder, it is impossible for me to remain indifferent when members of my community are enduring hardships.

I draw inspiration from Luke 4:18-19, where Jesus quotes Isaiah 61:1-2, declaring his mission to bring good news to the afflicted, proclaim liberty to captives, restore sight to the blind, and free the oppressed. Additionally, when faced with a hungry crowd in Matthew 14:17, Jesus instructs his disciples to provide food for them. These examples illustrate the importance of addressing the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of the community.

However, in carrying out these responsibilities, I must exercise both wisdom and innocence. Being as wise as a serpent means being astute and aware of the complex realities of the world, while being as innocent as a dove refers to maintaining a pure and virtuous intention, free from ulterior motives or corrupt practices.

Aristotle famously stated that man is a political animal. As a priest, I recognize the duty to fulfill my civil responsibilities as a citizen of the country. However, it is crucial to refrain from engaging in partisan politics. Taking a partisan stance would compromise my role as a spiritual father and undermine the moral authority I have to critique politicians when they engage in wrongdoing.

Fr. Albert Ikpenwa

The formation process described earlier equips priests to be bridge builders in the communities where they serve. The three major functions of a priest – teaching, sanctifying, and leading the people of God – are integral to community-building efforts. The church often utilizes the school system as a foundation for community development, alongside various youth organizations. The saying “Catch Them Young” emphasizes the importance of instilling good moral principles in the youth, as they are the future leaders who will impact society positively.

Seminarians undergo training in youth development and gain exposure to different fields of human endeavor. They are not isolated from the world but actively participate in apostolic work, gaining practical experience and developing the necessary skills to engage with diverse aspects of community life.

In conclusion, the seminary formation process, while focusing on spiritual, academic, human, and pastoral formation, prepares priests to undertake their essential functions as teachers, sanctifiers, and leaders in the community. Through their involvement in community-building efforts and engagement with various societal sectors, they contribute to the betterment of society and fulfill their role as ambassadors of Christ.

GMTNewsng: The Church, by reason of her role and competence, is not identified in any way with the political community nor bound to any political system. She is at once a sign and a safeguard of the transcendent character of the human person (Vatican II, Gaudium et Spes, n.76).

How can a priest fulfil this prophetic role without being accused of meddling into politics and of other abuses or scandals?

Back view of the Centenary hostel under construction

Father Rector: I strongly believe in the profound message conveyed by Gaudium et Spes, a document from the Second Vatican Council, which states that the joys and sorrows of the world are intricately linked to the joys and sorrows of the Church. As priests, we recognize that the Church is an integral part of society, deeply affected by its experiences. However, fulfilling this prophetic role church requires us to avoid compromising ourselves by aligning with any specific political party. The moment we do so, we risk losing our moral authority to address the issues faced by individuals within different political formations and parties. Therefore, it is paramount for the Church to refrain from involvement in partisan activities.

Maintaining a non-partisan stance allows the Church to preserve its objectivity and integrity. It enables us to boldly address and speak out against any wrongdoings within the political class. A steadfast commitment to independence empowers the Church to utilize its moral authority in advocating for necessary transformations. By remaining vigilant and vocal, we can strive to enact positive change not just within the Nigerian society, but also in other communities facing similar challenges.

I firmly advocate for the Church’s non-partisan position as a means to bring about a transformative impact on society. By abstaining from partisan activities, we can prioritize the common good, rising above divisions fostered by political affiliations. This way, the Church can serve as a reliable moral compass, guiding our society towards justice, equality, and progress. It is my belief that by embracing this stance, the Church can effectively contribute to changing the Nigerian society and other communities worldwide, fostering an environment conducive to holistic growth and collective well-being.

GMTNewsng: Next year, 2024, Bigard Memorial Seminary would celebrate its Centenary. I guess it would be a very big event.

What does it mean to you to celebrate the Centenary of a unique formational institution like Bigard, and what are the key aspects on which the centenary celebration would be concentrated?

November 14, 2019 centenary celebration kick off

Father Rector: Bigard, established in 1924, will mark its centenary in 2024, and I, as the Rector, am filled with gratitude to God for guiding this esteemed institution throughout its journey. By divine ordination, the seminary was founded with the purpose of training indigenous priests who would eventually take over from expatriate priests. Even before Nigeria gained independence in 1960, Bigard had already begun shaping a new generation of leaders who would ensure that the Church took root in Africa, beyond being seen as a religion dominated by the white man.

Over the years, Bigard has witnessed remarkable growth, starting with just five students in 1924 and now accommodating a thriving community of over 800 students. The impact of the seminary is evidenced by the incredible number of distinguished individuals it has produced. Among them are four Cardinals, fourteen Archbishops, and thirty-five bishops, in addition to a multitude of priests and lay professionals contributing to various spheres of life within and outside Nigeria.

Currently, our dedicated staff comprises twenty-six priests, collaborating with over fifty-seven external lecturers who bring their expertise and knowledge to enhance the educational experience for our students. The centenary celebration will be centered around the theme of thanksgiving, acknowledging God’s manifold blessings upon the seminary over the past century.

Various activities have been planned to mark this significant milestone. These include thought-provoking paper presentations, showcasing the intellectual depth of our institution. Furthermore, cultural and music displays will celebrate the vibrant diversity of Nigeria and its role in shaping the seminary’s identity.

As an expression of appreciation and recognition for the Bigard alumni’s achievements, a special day dedicated to them will be organized, allowing us to honor their contributions and foster connections among the Bigard community.

Father Albert Ikpenwa

To pay homage to our roots, we will hold masses at the locations where Bigard formerly resided, namely Igbariam, Okpala, and Afaha-Obong. These spiritual ceremonies will offer an opportunity to reflect, give thanks, and appreciate the journey of Bigard.

In addition to the centenary celebrations, we are actively engaged in constructing a new hostel with over fifty self-contained rooms. This initiative aims to improve the living conditions of our seminarians by alleviating the issue of overcrowding. The foundation stone was laid in 2019 by the Nuncio, the Bishops of the Province, and the Governors of Enugu and Anambra states. While the project commenced in 2020, we are gradually approaching the finishing stage, with an estimated cost of about N160 million. We kindly appeal for donations to ensure the completion of this project and its commissioning next year.

As we look forward to the centenary celebration, we anticipate a joyous occasion filled with thanksgiving, reflection, and a renewed commitment to the mission of Bigard. If you have any further inquiries or require assistance, please feel free to ask.

GMTNewsng: What is the size of the celebration, who and is expected to attend?

Father Rector: Thank you for this question. Here is a comprehensive overview of the anticipated size and esteemed guests set to attend this momentous celebration. The centenary journey commenced in 2019 with a remarkable kickoff, graced by the presence of the Papal representative, all the Bishops of our Province, and even delegates sent by Bishops from outside the province. In addition, our esteemed Bigard alumni, some of whom hold distinguished professorships across various institutions, were present to make the event truly special. Eminent scholars were also invited, and we aim to maintain this esteemed tradition.

As we continue planning for the upcoming celebration, we will extend invitations to key figures in various domains. The Papal representative will be here once again, governors of the South Eastern States, federal ministers, esteemed former ministers, and prominent Nigerian citizens are all expected to be present at this auspicious event. The celebration is intended to be inclusive, welcoming individuals from all walks of life, ensuring that it will be a genuinely memorable experience. The dedicated presence of our esteemed Bigard alumni will add further significance and contribute to the success of the gathering.

Let me also share with you a compelling fact that accentuates the influence of Bigard over the years. Our institution has proudly produced four Cardinals, 13 Archbishops, and 35 Bishops, with thousands of priests serving across the globe. We are honored to welcome those among them who are available to join us during this momentous occasion. The notable presence of accomplished individuals such as Cardinals Arinze and Okpalaeke, who are both proud products of Bigard, will undoubtedly add an extra layer of significance and prestige to the celebration.

My greatest joy as the Rector of Bigard comes from witnessing the impact of our institution on the lives of our graduates. It fills me with immense pride to see our priests and lay individuals from Nigeria and other African countries serving both the Church and humanity in various capacities and spheres of life. Their dedication and commitment inspire me each day.

GMTNewsng: Attaining the revered position of Rector at a prestigious institution like Bigard Memorial Seminary is an impressive accomplishment that requires unwavering dedication, deep theological knowledge, and exemplary leadership skills. The journey towards this esteemed role demands years of steadfast commitment and a profound understanding of the seminary’s traditions and values. Serving as Rector for an extended period of time further accentuates the challenges and responsibilities entrusted to this esteemed position.

Now, may we inquire about how long you have served as the Rector of a strategic institution like the BMS, and are there projects that you have been able to execute?

Rev Fr. Albert Okechukwu Ikpenwa

Father Rector: Since my appointment as the Rector of Bigard in 2015, I have been diligently working alongside the formators to ensure the smooth functioning of the seminary in its academic, human, material, and infrastructural aspects.

One of the key responsibilities is to source and provide qualified lecturers who can deliver high-quality education to our students. Additionally, ensuring the availability of essential amenities such as food, water, and electricity is of utmost importance. It is unfortunate that in Nigeria, it is often necessary for institutions like ours to independently secure these necessities.

We are grateful for the efforts of the past rectors who, together with the Bishops of the Province and our generous foreign benefactors, played a vital role in building many of the infrastructures that we benefit from today. Since my assumption of office, my focus has been on maintaining the existing facilities while also introducing new ones to meet the evolving needs of the seminary.

In the area of water supply, we have made efforts to maintain the infrastructure we inherited while also implementing improvements. This includes the installation of new water pipelines, acquiring new pumping machines, establishing additional sources of power supply to the intake point, and expanding the number of water storage tanks around the compound.

To address the issue of electricity supply, we have installed solar plants with a combined generating power of 25kva. Furthermore, we received a generous donation of a 275 Kva plant from Chief Sir Tony Ezenna of Orange Drugs, which reinforces our commitment to providing a stable power supply.

Lay staff quarters

Regarding housing, we have constructed a new six-apartment block for the formators and a ten-apartment block for the lay staff. Additionally, we have completed and equipped the ground floor of our primary school, enhancing the learning environment with facilities such as outdoor play areas, computer and library rooms, and other essential amenities.

The health of both our staff and students is of great importance, which led to the completion and equipping of our clinic, St. Luke’s Clinic, initiated by my predecessor, Very Rev. Fr. Ukoro Igwe.

Renovations have also taken place in various areas. We have addressed the construction and reconstruction of toilet facilities in the students’ hostels, plastered and beautified the external face of the Bigard fence from Christ Church to Mgbemena Road, and even asphalting our 2nd avenue. Virtually all the buildings within the institution have received necessary updates and improvements throughout the years.

We are immensely grateful for the donations we have received from our benefactors. These include the construction of the AVE MARIA Grotto/Court, generously sponsored by Chief Emeka Madonna Okafor, the donation of a 270 kva generator by Chief Sir Tony Ezenna of Orange Drugs, a 15kva solar plant donated by Mr. Anton Zylstra from St. Mauritius Nordkirchen, Germany through Fr. Thaddeus Eze, and the contribution of an 18-seater bus by Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State, as well as another 18-seater bus by Governor Willi Obianno of Anambra State. Notably, a 28-seater coaster bus was provided by Governor Peter Obi, the former governor of Anambra State, through the efforts of my predecessor, Very Rev. Fr. Ukoro Igwe.

These acts of generosity have greatly contributed to the growth and development of Bigard, and we are sincerely grateful for the support we have received.

Cardinal Arinze Fathers’ House

GMTNewsng: Lastly Father, the seminary has witnessed a lot of development infrastructure wise since you assumed duty as Rector, this is quite commendable. Could you kindly share with us the joys and challenges you’ve experienced in this role?

Father Rector: My greatest joy as the Rector of Bigard comes from witnessing the impact of our institution on the lives of our graduates. It fills me with immense pride to see our priests and lay individuals from Nigeria and other African countries serving both the Church and humanity in various capacities and spheres of life. Their dedication and commitment inspire me each day.

However, I must admit that one of my greatest challenges as the Rector lies in the prevailing breakdown of economic, social, moral, and security structures within our country. It has become increasingly difficult to effectively run any institution in Nigeria, including Bigard. The challenging circumstances we face require us to navigate and adapt to a constantly changing environment.

In the face of these challenges, our faith remains strong, and we continue to prayerfully hope and work towards a total turnaround for the betterment of our country. We believe that with steadfast prayer and effort, Nigeria will experience positive transformation in its economic, social, moral, and security realms.

As the centenary celebration approaches, we hold onto the belief that through the collective efforts of Bigard and other institutions, we can contribute to the development, healing, and progress of Nigeria. We remain committed to our mission of nurturing and equipping individuals who will serve as agents of positive change in both Church and society. GMTNewsng
