…I will be happier if it is Nkanu East

The former governor of old Enugu state and former national Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, and proponent of the “triangular political equilibrium” in Enugu State, Dr. Okwesilieze Nwodo, has affirmed that there is a subsisting agreement on rotation of the seat of governor among the three (3) senatorial districts of Enugu State.

The former governor dropped the hint when members of Nkanu East Leaders Consultative Forum, NELCF, paid him a courtesy visit at his Enugu residence to seek his support in their quest for the state’s 2023 governorship slot coming to Enugu East Senatorial District to be ceded to them.

NELCF said Nkanu East Local Government Area deserved Enugu state governorship more than any other LGA in Enugu East zone due to her pitiable state of underdevelopment.

Nkanu East which is seeking support of all stakeholders to prevail on other council areas within Enugu East zone to conceed the slot to them, said the LGA has no meaningful infrastructure especially roads and government presence both state and federal inspite of its abundant human and natural resources and other economic endowments.

Dr. Okwy Nwodo, while responding to a request by the leader of Nkanu East Leaders’ Consultative Group, Prof Bart Nnaji, former Minister of Power, who visited him in his Enugu residence, confirmed that there was an agreement for the rotation of governorship position among the three senatorial zones in Enugu State which happened during Sullivan Chime administration.

The former governor who praised the unity and sense of purpose of NELCF, said that with such bond and commitment there was nothing they cannot achieve noting that he would be happier if Enugu East zone considered Nkanu East for the governorship position.

Narrating how the understanding was initiated, he said “I was very happy when under Gov. Sullivan, we decided that we shall be rotating (Governorship) position in Enugu State.

“That day I was at the Government House when it was agreed on. It was Dubem Onyia that moved the motion. I don’t know what put it into his head. His motion was that Chimaroke Nnamani from Enugu East Senatorial District had become governor, Sullivan was on the saddle, from Enugu West Senatorial District, that after Sullivan, it (governorship slot) should move to the North (Enugu North Senatorial District).

“We from Nsukka were very happy and didn’t know how to express our joy. That motion was making things easy for us. However, it was Chief Egumgbe that amended the motion to say that, “after it had gone round, after Enugu North Senatorial zone, it should return to continue with Enugu East Senatorial zone. Chief Ben Collins Ndu supported the motion, and it was carried unanimously.

“The way everybody was happy as a result of this, no one could oppose it. We all agreed. So as far as am concerned, it is your turn.

“It is the turn of Enugu East and the way Nkanu East is going about it with the cream de la cream of your people is admirable. There’s no stakeholder that you would visit that won’t pay attention to you. So we are begging God. But let me be a bit personal, if it comes to you, I will be happier.

“I wish you people well and wish that if Enugu East people would form a consensus that it should be Nkanu East and you give it to the best among you, I will greet you more.” GMTNews

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to fairness, unity, and equal treatment for all Nigerians, irrespective of religion, during a visit to Jos, Plateau State, on Saturday. The President made the pledge while meeting with Christian leaders at the headquarters of the Church of Christ in Nations (COCIN), shortly before attending the funeral of Nana Lydia Yilwatda, mother of the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Chairman, Professor Nantawe Yilwatda.

“I have a mission to unite this country and ensure its prosperity. We are making progress,” President Tinubu declared, assuring Northern Christian leaders that his administration would continue to promote religious harmony and inclusivity. He emphasized that his leadership style and personal life reflect tolerance and respect for diversity, adding, “In our family, we have a strong Muslim background, and I married a Christian — a pastor for that matter — and I have never forced her to change her religion.”

The President also restated his administration’s determination to end insecurity and revamp the nation’s economy. “We are defeating bandits, and we will defeat them completely. We will deal with them and combat the farmers-herders clashes,” Tinubu said. He urged the clergy to have faith in his government’s ongoing reforms under the Renewed Hope Agenda, stressing that both economic and security sectors are being overhauled for the benefit of all citizens.

Paying tribute to the late Nana Lydia Yilwatda, Tinubu described her as “a devoted mother and a humanitarian,” recalling his long association with the city of Jos. “When we were coming here, Governor Caleb Muftwang showed me the house of Ambassador Yahaya Kwande. During the SDP days, we met there to decide the fate of MKO Abiola. Today, I am grateful to be alive and to return as President to bid farewell to the mother of this community,” he said.

Professor Nantawe Yilwatda, in his tribute, described his late mother as a tireless and compassionate woman who battled illness for decades while still supporting others. “My mother worked for twenty-four hours despite her health condition, supporting us and providing humanitarian assistance,” he said, expressing gratitude to President Tinubu for his leadership and continued trust in him.

Reverend Dr. Amos Mohzo, President and Spiritual Leader of COCIN, commended President Tinubu for appointing Northern Christians to key national positions, including Senator George Akume as Secretary to the Government of the Federation and Professor Yilwatda as APC National Chairman. He also thanked the President for his efforts to restore peace in Plateau and Benue States and appealed for further support to resettle displaced Christian communities from Borno and Adamawa who fled to Cameroon due to insurgency.

Dignitaries at the funeral included Senate President Godswill Akpabio; Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume; National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu; Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila; and the Chairman of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum, AbdulRazaq Abdulrahman. Also in attendance were several serving and former governors, ministers, lawmakers, and members of the APC National Working Committee, who joined family and friends to honour the late Nana Lydia Yilwatda. The Medical Women’s International Association (MWIA) has urged Federal and State Governments to upgrade hospitals across the country for effective healthcare delivery and for emergency responses.

Dr Eleanor Nwadinobi, the President of MWIA, made the call in a statement on Saturday in Enugu following the death of Arise TV news Anchor, Somtochukwu Maduagwu.

Nwadinobi said the tragic story surrounding the death of Maduagwu of Arise News TV Station, was a wake-up call for Nigeria and Nigerians.

She decried the current state of security institutions, medical and healthcare institutions as well as Nigerian educational institutions.

“Nigeria has happened to Sommie and several others. Who will be next?.

“The greatest sign of a dysfunctional healthcare system and lack of trust in healthcare institutions of a country, occurs when the majority of the elite seek health care or die in foreign hospitals,” she said.

The president emphasised the need for the government to prioritise healthcare delivery and build confidence in the country’s health institutions.

“Silence is not an option and medical women globally are joining their colleagues in Nigeria to advocate for improvement in the health care delivery system.

“It is a time for the Nigerian government to prioritise security, health care, and education.

“Maduagwu represents millions of Nigerians who have perished on account of the deterioration of Nigerian security and health care systems.

“We must accept that the healthcare delivery system of Nigeria is broken and we call for all hands to be on deck to simply fix it,” Nwadinobi.

She, however, expressed MWIA’s most sincere condolences to Maduagwu’s family, Prince Nduka Obaigbena, the Chairman and CEO of Thisday Arise Group family and Nigerians. GMTNewsng
