The Bayelsa State Police Command has welcomed a new Commissioner of Police, CP Daniel Iyamah, following the promotion of the former commissioner, Francis Idu, to the rank of Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG).

The handover took place on Friday, January 2, 2026.

CP Iyamah said the peculiar terrain of Bayelsa, characterised by vast waterways, oil and gas infrastructure, and a vibrant youth population, required policing strategies that are adaptive, inclusive and responsive to both conventional and emerging security threats.

He emphasised that the protection of lives, property and critical national assets remains the top priority of the Nigeria Police Force, adding that he had been fully briefed on the prevailing security challenges in the state.

The new commissioner noted that his prior service in Bayelsa as Deputy Commissioner of Police in the State Criminal Investigation Department and later as Deputy Commissioner of Police had given him firsthand knowledge of the state’s security landscape.

According to him, this experience would enable him to decisively strengthen the existing security architecture.

CP Iyamah announced that the command had adopted a zero-tolerance stance against all forms of violence and organised crime, including kidnapping, armed robbery, sea piracy and the illegal possession of firearms.

He also directed officers to confront pipeline vandalism, crude oil theft, illegal refining and other acts of economic sabotage firmly and without compromise.

The commissioner further stated that preventive policing measures would be intensified to address inter-communal tensions, youth-related disturbances and election-related conflicts, with the aim of maintaining peace and stability across the state.

He appealed to residents to support the police by providing timely and credible information, cooperating with officers and promoting peace within their communities.

Meanwhile, the outgoing commissioner, AIG Francis Idu, urged officers of the command to give maximum cooperation to the new CP, stressing the importance of collaboration with sister security agencies to ensure the continued safety and security of Bayelsa State and its environs.
