The Ogun State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of eight suspects on Christmas Day for allegedly assaulting police officers while they were carrying out lawful duties in Sango-Ota.

The suspects were accused of engaging in unlawful assembly, breaching public peace, obstructing traffic, and attacking officers deployed to maintain law and order.

The command’s spokesperson, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, disclosed this in a statement issued on Friday in Abeokuta.

According to Babaseyi, the incident occurred at Temidire Junction and Under-Bridge, Sango-Ota, where a group operating under the name “Democratic Republic of the Yoruba” allegedly barricaded major roads, set bonfires, disrupted vehicular movement, and confronted police personnel.

“Upon receiving the report, police operatives swiftly mobilised to the affected locations, dispersed the group, and arrested all eight suspects,” he said.

He added that items recovered included a Toyota Dyna vehicle used to convey the suspects, two broadcast devices, a carton containing flags, shirts bearing agitation inscriptions, and banners displaying their messages and manifesto.

Babaseyi stated that the suspects would be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.

Meanwhile, the Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Lanre Ogunlowo, reassured residents of the command’s commitment to protecting lives and property.

He warned that the Police would not tolerate any act capable of disrupting public peace and stressed that assaults on officers would attract decisive action.

Ogunlowo urged members of the public to remain law-abiding and promptly report suspicious activities through the command’s emergency toll-free lines.
