A Catholic priest, Rev. Fr. Chimaobi Okoye, has urged Christians to approach Christmas with restraint and deep reflection, stressing that the celebration marks the birth of Jesus Christ and not a contest of wealth or extravagance.

Okoye made the call during his Christmas sermon at the Good Shepherd Catholic Church, Archbishop Obiefuna Retreat Centre, Okpuno, in Anambra State.

He cautioned that Christmas celebrations should not impose financial pressure on individuals or push them into spending beyond their means.

According to the cleric, the true meaning of Christmas is often lost when people focus excessively on new clothes, lavish parties and material display.

“The essence of Christmas goes far beyond outward celebration. It calls for sober reflection on the birth of Christ and its meaning for humanity,” he said.

Okoye encouraged Christians to use the Christmas season to emulate the life and teachings of Jesus Christ by promoting love, sacrifice and selfless service within their communities, noting that such values best reflect the spirit of the season.
