The Northern States Governors’ Forum has strongly condemned the suicide attack on the Gomboru Market Mosque in Maiduguri, Borno State.
The Chairman of the Forum and Governor of Gombe State, Inuwa Yahaya, expressed the position of his colleagues in a statement issued on Thursday by his media aide, Mr Ismaila Uba-Misilli.
Yahaya described the attack as barbaric, cowardly and a deliberate attempt to instil fear and undermine peace in the region, particularly during the festive period.
He extended condolences to the Government and people of Borno State, as well as to families of the victims, noting that the targeting of a place of worship was a grave assault on human conscience and religious values.
The forum stressed that the attack only strengthened the resolve of Northern states to remain united against terrorism and violent extremism.
Yahaya called for enhanced security measures around mosques, churches and public spaces, especially during periods of large gatherings, assuring residents that governors in the region stood firmly with security agencies to prevent further incidents.
He also pledged the forum’s full solidarity with Borno State as authorities intensify efforts to bring perpetrators of the attack to justice.
The governors prayed for the repose of the souls of those killed, quick recovery for the injured, and strength for the families affected by the tragedy.
The suicide attack, which occurred during Maghrib prayers on Wednesday evening, reportedly claimed five lives and left at least 35 worshippers injured after a suspected bomber detonated explosives inside the mosque.
