Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State on Tuesday swore in two new commissioners, describing the appointments as a strategic step to reinforce his administration’s commitment to efficient and results-driven governance.
The newly appointed commissioners are Mr Osinachi Nnajieze and Dr Charles Egumgbe.
Nnajieze, formerly Special Adviser on Legal Matters, was appointed Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, replacing Dr Kingsley Udeh, now Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology. Egumgbe was named Commissioner for Chieftaincy Matters and Rural Development, a newly created ministry carved out of the former Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Chieftaincy Affairs.
Speaking during the swearing-in ceremony at the Executive Chambers, Government House, Enugu, Mbah stated that there would be no grace period for both new and existing commissioners.
According to him, the administration must sustain the pace of development to meet the rising expectations of residents, driven by achievements recorded in less than three years.
As part of measures to strengthen governance processes, the governor announced that all contract payments would henceforth require clearance from the Office of the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, to curb sharp practices among contractors.
“The Ministry of Justice is the engine room of governance. We cannot proceed with contracts, investments or projects without proper legal clearance,” Mbah said.
He charged Nnajieze to brace up for the demands of the office, stressing that the sensitivity and scope of responsibilities required immediate action and total commitment.
Addressing the creation of the Ministry of Chieftaincy Matters and Rural Development, Mbah said traditional institutions and rural communities were central to administration and development in the state.
He directed Egumgbe to strengthen order and stability within traditional institutions, noting their importance to grassroots governance.
Responding on behalf of the new commissioners, Nnajieze assured the governor that they understood the weight of responsibility placed on them and pledged to support the administration’s transformation agenda.
“We will drive this vision with you and sustain the momentum of development in Enugu State,” he said.
