December 22, 2025

Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State on Monday presented a ₦1.43 trillion Appropriation Bill for the 2026 fiscal year to the Imo State House of Assembly, marking a significant expansion in the state’s spending framework.

The proposed budget represents a 78 per cent increase over the ₦807 billion approved for the 2025 fiscal year and is tagged “Budget of Economic Breakthrough.”

Presenting the bill, Uzodimma said the Appropriation proposal was heavily tilted toward capital development, with 83.4 per cent earmarked for capital expenditure and 16.6 per cent allocated to recurrent spending.

According to the governor, the projected recurrent expenditure of about ₦238.499 billion will cover personnel costs, overheads and statutory subventions, while capital expenditure is estimated at slightly above ₦1 trillion.

Gov. Uzodimma explained that the 2026 Appropriation framework was based on expectations of improved federal allocations, stronger internally generated revenue and his administration’s resolve to eliminate what he described as a “generator-based power economy.”

He said the budget reflected his government’s determination to deliver world-class infrastructure capable of driving sustainable economic development in the state.

“This budget is a clear statement of my administration’s direction and determination to provide the infrastructure required for economic breakthrough in Imo State,” the governor said.

A breakdown of the Appropriation showed that the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security was allocated ₦20.506 billion, while the Ministry of Health received the largest allocation of ₦698.163 billion.

The Ministry of Works and Infrastructural Development was allocated ₦87.727 billion, while ₦6.471 billion was earmarked for the Ministry of Entrepreneurship and Skill Acquisition.

Gov. Uzodimma further disclosed that the Ministry of Power and Electrification would receive ₦190.451 billion, with the Ministry of Education allocated ₦60.623 billion. The Ministry of Rural Development was allotted ₦15.106 billion.

The governor commended members of the House of Assembly for what he described as their partnership with the executive arm of government, thanking them for their cooperation and support.

Responding, the Speaker of the House, Mr Chike Olemgbe, expressed optimism that the Appropriation Bill would lead to improved power supply, expanded infrastructure, enhanced healthcare delivery and strengthened human capital development in the state.

Olemgbe also praised the governor’s initiatives in the area of security and assured him of the Assembly’s support in ensuring the successful implementation of policies aimed at the state’s progress.

In a vote of thanks, the Deputy Speaker, Mr Amarachi Iwuanyanwu, commended Uzodimma for what he described as his diligent leadership and achievements in office.

The House subsequently adjourned deliberation on the bill to Dec. 23 for its second reading.
