Governor Peter Mbah has presented a ₦1.62 trillion appropriation bill for the 2026 fiscal year to the Enugu State House of Assembly. The proposal, submitted on Tuesday in Enugu, marks a 66.5 percent increase over the 2025 budget and is designed to sustain the administration’s development momentum.
Introducing the budget tagged “Budget of Renewed Momentum,” Mbah stated that the size of the estimate reflects his government’s intention to build on the progress achieved in the past two years. He noted that the fiscal plan remains focused on policies that directly impact citizens and accelerate growth.
Providing details of the proposal, Mbah explained that ₦321 billion – representing 20 percent of the total, has been allocated to recurrent expenditure, while ₦1.29 trillion is earmarked for capital expenditure. He added that the financial framework is anchored on four pillars: empowerment and education, inclusive and people-centred development, good governance, and economic transformation.
According to the governor, the 2026 budget will be financed with ₦870 billion from Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), ₦387 billion from federal allocation, and ₦329 billion from capital receipts.
A breakdown of sectoral allocations shows the Economic Sector receiving the highest share with ₦825 billion. The Social Sector follows with ₦644 billion, while the Administration Sector gets ₦128 billion. The Law and Justice Sector is allotted ₦15 billion, and the Regional Sector receives ₦2 billion.
Reviewing the outgoing year, Mbah said the 2025 budget recorded an 83 percent implementation level and expressed confidence that performance would further improve before year-end.
Responding after the presentation, Speaker of the House, Chief Uche Ugwu, commended the governor for the transformation seen across the state in just two years. He pledged continued legislative support and assured that the appropriation bill would receive accelerated consideration to ensure the government meets its development targets.
The submission of the ₦1.62 trillion proposal reinforces the administration’s fiscal direction, with the appropriation bill positioned as a key driver of the state’s next phase of growth.
