The Labour Party’s candidate, Dr. George Moghalu, has alleged widespread vote buying during the ongoing Anambra governorship election, describing the situation as worrisome and capable of undermining democracy.
Moghalu made the allegation on Saturday while speaking to newsmen shortly after casting his vote at Uruagu Ward 1, Nnewi. He urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to uphold its responsibility of ensuring a credible election that reflects the true will of the people.
The Labour Party candidate also lamented voter apathy, attributing it to the loss of public confidence in the electoral process.
“I am not impressed. So far, there have been no technical glitches, but it’s too early to say whether the process is free and fair. We’ll continue to monitor developments,” Moghalu said.
He, however, acknowledged that there had been slight improvements in voting arrangements compared to previous elections, but insisted that monetising the process compromised its integrity.
“If you monetise a process, you weaponise poverty, what then is free about it?” he asked.
“There’s clearly low voter turnout, and that has been the trend.”
Moghalu called on INEC to continue refining the election process to rebuild trust among citizens, adding that voter apathy was a direct result of people’s disillusionment with governance and accountability. Visit GMTNewsng for more news.
