Anambra 2025 Election: 96-Year-Old Woman Denied Right to Vote, Breaks Down in Tears

Agulu, Anambra – November 8, 2025 – A 96-yar-old woman, Mrs. Elizabeth Onike, broke down in tears at Umudim Akasi Polling Unit 019, Agulu Ward 8, Anaocha Local Government Area, on Saturday after being denied the right to vote in the Anambra 2025 election.

Mrs. Onike, a long-time voter at the polling unit, was reportedly stopped by an INEC official because she did not have a valid voter card. The elderly woman, visibly distraught, described the incident as deeply disappointing.

“I have been voting at this polling unit. I voted in the last election, but the INEC officials said I have no valid voter card. My children are outside the state, and none is at home with me. I am pained that I cannot vote in this election to determine who will be my next governor,” she said in Igbo dialect.

The incident occurred amid a large voter turnout at the polling unit, which has 830 registered voters, highlighting the high stakes of the Anambra 2025 governorship election.

Observers at the scene noted that while most voters cast their ballots without issues, Mrs. Onike’s denial underscored ongoing concerns about voter card verification and accessibility for elderly citizens during the Anambra voting process.
