The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, Mr Olohundare Jimoh, has confirmed that political activist and former presidential candidate, Sowore, remains wanted by the police. He directed that the activist be arrested anywhere he is sighted across the state.
Speaking with journalists during a Show of Force operation on the Third Mainland Bridge, CP Jimoh said the Lagos Police Command had intensified security patrols to prevent a recurrence of the violent protests linked to Omoyele Sowore on September 8.
He described the exercise as a confidence building move designed to reassure Lagos residents of their safety and restore public trust in law enforcement.
“This is to ensure we do not have a repeat of what happened on Sept. 8. Sowore is known for his antics. He is ignorant of the law and arrogant. I have declared him wanted. Anywhere he is seen whether in a hotel, in transit, or at the airport, he should be apprehended and prosecuted,” CP Jimoh stated.
The police chief revealed that security agencies had obtained credible intelligence about plans by Sowore and his associates to stage coordinated protests aimed at disrupting public peace. He said officers acted swiftly to foil the plan.
“When he was planning the mayhem, we got information ahead and struck at the gathering point where over 300 protesters had converged. In the process, 13 were arrested, and the vehicle intended to block the Third Mainland Bridge was recovered. Those suspects have been arraigned and remanded in custody,” he added.
According to the commissioner, Sowore has been evading arrest despite making appearances in Abuja. “If he is bold enough to show up in Abuja, why can’t he appear in Lagos? Let him come forward and face the law,” he challenged.
Jimoh maintained that the police had the constitutional power to declare anyone wanted if their actions threaten public safety. “Under Section 215, subsections 1(b), 4, and 5 of the Constitution, I have the authority to protect lives and property. I deemed it fit to declare Sowore wanted because of his threat to the peace and welfare of Lagos residents,” he said.
He further explained that the temporary closure of the Berger Bus Stop was a preventive measure to maintain order, assuring that it was reopened daily by 3:00 p.m. with alternative routes provided for commuters.
CP Jimoh called on Lagosians to remain law abiding and vigilant, reiterating that Sowore’s actions would not disrupt the state’s peace.
“The entire Lagos is safe. We are fully on the ground every hour of the day to ensure residents go about their lawful activities without fear,” he concluded. Visit GMTNewsng for more news.
