The demolition of the Ahmed Bola Tinubu Support Group 2027 office and other structures in Makurdi, Benue State, has sparked widespread reactions and raised questions about the motive behind the action.
Dr. Aker Kpev, Director General of the Ahmed Bola Tinubu Support Group 2027, told journalists on Thursday that officials of the Benue State Urban Development Board carried out the demolition without prior notice.
Kpev said the matter has been reported to relevant authorities, adding that investigations would determine the real reason for the demolition. He explained that the office, which was inaugurated on October 31, was destroyed alongside its perimeter fence and gate.
However, the Benue State Government said the ongoing demolition along the Wurukum-Yaikyor-Apir-Ikpayongo axis of Makurdi was part of the dualisation of the Makurdi-Enugu Road.
Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Tersoo Kula, in a statement, explained that the demolition exercise was supervised by government officials as part of a wider infrastructure renewal project.
Kula stated that property owners with proper approvals had been duly compensated, while structures without valid documentation or those built on government right of way were removed in line with urban development regulations.
“It is mischievous for anyone whose property has been marked for lawful demolition to politicise the process by mounting billboards or posting images of leaders to stir sentiment or blackmail the government,” he said.
He stressed that the demolition was not an act of victimisation but a necessary step toward urban renewal and road expansion in the state.
“Development cannot thrive in an atmosphere of distortion and political mischief. The ongoing demolition is part of our commitment to modernization and better road infrastructure for the people of Benue and Nigeria,” Kula added. Visit GMTNewsng for more news.
