Enugu, Oct. 28, 2025 – The Enugu Health Commissioner, Prof. George Ugwu, has declared that the state government will no longer tolerate health workers who neglect or abandon their duties in public hospitals.
Speaking during an unscheduled facility inspection at Agbani General Hospital in Nkanu West Local Government Area, the Enugu Health Commissioner warned that any worker found guilty of laxity or absenteeism would face disciplinary action.
Prof. Ugwu, who was accompanied by management staff of the ministry and representatives of the World Health Organisation (WHO), expressed deep disappointment at the level of indiscipline observed among some personnel during the visit. He described the situation as unacceptable and contrary to Governor Peter Mbah’s commitment to repositioning Enugu’s health sector for efficiency, accountability, and top-quality service delivery.
According to the Enugu Health Commissioner, public health workers have a sacred duty to safeguard lives and uphold professionalism and integrity in the discharge of their responsibilities. He emphasized that the era of impunity and indifference to official duties in the state’s healthcare system was over.
Prof. Ugwu noted that the surprise inspection formed part of the ministry’s strategic reform plan to strengthen service delivery, improve monitoring, and ensure adherence to public service standards. He added that the government was determined to foster a culture of discipline, dedication, and accountability across all healthcare facilities in Enugu State.
During the visit, the Enugu Health Commissioner inspected the hospital’s infrastructure, equipment, and patient care units, directing immediate corrective measures where lapses were found. He reaffirmed the state government’s unwavering commitment to upgrading health infrastructure and enhancing workers’ welfare, stressing that these investments must be matched by diligence and professionalism.
Prof. Ugwu also commended the Nkanu West Local Government Chairman, Mr. John Ogbodo, for the ongoing renovations and landscaping at the Agbani General Hospital, describing them as a positive step toward improving the hospital’s environment and service delivery.
