Minna, Oct. 28, 2025 – In a major step toward peaceful elections, Niger Political Parties have signed a comprehensive peace accord, pledging to uphold transparency, credibility, and unity during the forthcoming local government polls in Niger State.
The peace accord, initiated by the Niger State Police Commissioner, Adamu Elleman, brought together Niger Political Parties, security agencies, and electoral stakeholders ahead of the November 1 elections. The signing ceremony took place at the Police Command headquarters in Minna, emphasizing the collective responsibility of political actors to ensure peace before, during, and after the polls.
According to a statement issued by the Police Command spokesperson, SP Wasiu Abiodun, the event had in attendance the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) Chairman, Niger Chapter, Alhaji Isah Makujeri; the Chairman of the Niger State Independent Electoral Commission (NSIEC), Mohammed Imam; and the Special Adviser to the Governor on Political Affairs, Nma Kolo. Also present were representatives of security agencies, Area Commanders, and Divisional Police Officers – all lending support to the Niger Political Parties’ peace initiative.
Addressing the gathering, the Niger Police Commissioner explained that the peace accord was designed to foster maturity, discipline, and responsible conduct among Niger Political Parties and their supporters. He emphasized that the Police, in collaboration with NSIEC and other security agencies, had made adequate arrangements to guarantee a safe and credible electoral process across all 25 local government areas.
Elleman reminded the leadership of Niger Political Parties that the constitutional duty of the Police is to protect citizens, not to intimidate them. He urged political supporters, particularly the youth, to shun violence and act as ambassadors of peace. He reaffirmed the Police Command’s neutrality and commitment to professionalism, stressing that peace remains the foundation of democracy.
In his remarks, the NSIEC Chairman, Mohammed Imam, applauded the cooperation of Niger Political Parties and other stakeholders in promoting dialogue and mutual respect. He revealed that the Commission had developed a 15-point agenda aimed at ensuring the transparent election of 24 Local Government Chairmen and 274 Councillors across 4,950 polling units. Imam urged Niger Political Parties to treat the peace accord as a binding pledge to uphold honesty and integrity throughout the process.
Imam also commended the role of IPAC in facilitating dialogue between Niger Political Parties and election authorities. He assured that NSIEC and security agencies had implemented robust security and logistical plans to guarantee a free, fair, and peaceful exercise.
The IPAC Chairman, Alhaji Isah Makujeri, speaking on behalf of all Niger Political Parties, appreciated NSIEC for providing six months of preparation time, allowing political actors to organize their campaigns responsibly. He praised Governor Muhammad Bago’s administration for promoting democratic values and maintaining neutrality in the political process. Makujeri emphasized that whoever wins the election should be declared the rightful winner, reflecting the will of the people and ensuring a credible democratic outcome.
He further commended the Police for the peaceful conduct of the recent Munya bye-election, expressing optimism that the local government elections would be even more peaceful due to the unity shown by Niger Political Parties.
During the session, several suggestions and observations from participants were addressed by both the NSIEC Chairman and the Police Commissioner. The peace accord was formally read aloud by the Command’s Legal Officer, CSP Jude Akaeze, and was jointly signed by representatives of all Niger Political Parties present, marking a new milestone in the state’s pursuit of democratic stability and peace.
