FG Reaffirms Commitment to Affordable Housing for Low-Income Nigerians

The Federal Government has restated its determination to make affordable housing accessible to low-income Nigerians through sustainable financing and inclusive development programmes.

Speaking at the 4th Amadeo Business Summit (ABS) 4.0 held in Enugu on Thursday, the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Mr. Ahmed Dangiwa, said the ministry was redesigning its financial architecture through the National Social Housing Fund (NSHF) to make homes truly affordable for all Nigerians.

“Government housing will now be offered at affordability-based pricing – not more than one-third of a person’s income – ensuring that home ownership is within reach,” Dangiwa stated.

Affordable Housing Through Local Manufacturing

According to the minister, the Federal Government plans to stabilize prices and create jobs by establishing building materials manufacturing hubs across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones.

He noted that the initiative would help reduce import dependence and promote locally made construction materials – a step he described as “a tangible expression of hope and national renewal.”

Renewed Hope Homeownership Campaign

To deepen affordable housing access, Dangiwa announced a partnership with the Know This Nigeria Network (KTNN) under the Renewed Hope National Homeownership and Housing Development Campaign.

“This campaign will bridge the gap between federal vision and state-level action, pushing for land reforms and sustainable homeownership across Nigeria,” he said.

The initiative will create expert advisory structures in each state, helping governors and housing institutions maximize both federal and international housing opportunities. The campaign officially launches later this month in Katsina State before expanding nationwide.

Urban Renewal and Slum Upgrades

Dangiwa also revealed that over 10,000 new homes were currently under construction nationwide, designed as serviced communities where families could live, work, and thrive.

He added that through the National Urban Renewal and Slum Upgrade Programme, the government aims to transform more than 150 neglected communities into livable neighbourhoods with essential amenities such as roads, drainage, water, and sanitation.

FMBN Supports Affordable Housing Drive

Delivering a goodwill message, Mrs. Chinenye Anosike, Acting Managing Director of the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN), emphasized that thriving in tough economic times requires innovation, collaboration, and digital transformation.

She said the bank was modernizing its systems and leveraging technology to enhance service delivery for contributors to the National Housing Fund (NHF).

“We are ensuring that Nigerian workers – the contributors – receive efficient and transparent services,” Anosike noted.

She added that the bank had already provided access to over 137,000 Nigerians through its NHF mortgage loans and home renovation programmes.

Experts Urge Innovation in Mortgage Products

In his keynote address, Dr. Femi Adewale called for greater creativity in mortgage product design and flexible repayment methods to make affordable housing more sustainable. He urged collaboration between FMBN and other mortgage financiers.

Earlier, the Convener of the Amadeo Business Summit, Dr. Ugochukwu Chime, said the forum was designed to equip business leaders, policymakers, and young entrepreneurs with tools to navigate challenges and capitalize on emerging opportunities. GMTNewsng
