•••Enugu’s iconic Hotel Presidential, long derelict after years of concession disputes, is set for commissioning next week ahead of the NBA Annual General Conference, announced Governor Peter Mbah – a major boost for tourism, business, and MSMEs.

Enugu, Nigeria – In a landmark announcement during a stakeholders engagement earlier today in Enugu, Governor Peter Mbah disclosed that the long-derelict Hotel Presidential will be officially commissioned next week, just ahead of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Annual General Conference 2025. The reopening is set to mark a new chapter for one of Eastern Nigeria’s most iconic hospitality assets.

Once a beacon of hospitality, Hotel Presidential slid into disuse following protracted concession disputes. In 2013, the Enugu State Government leased the property to Primeview Hotels Ltd under a 35-year concession, but the deal soon soured amid disagreements over obligations, funding, and alleged forceful takeover attempts in 2017. The standoff sparked years of litigation, stalling refurbishment plans and leaving the landmark to deteriorate – a situation that drew sharp criticism from investors and tourism stakeholders.

Governor Mbah told the gathering that his administration broke the deadlock in 2024 by awarding a contract for a full revamp, backed by a dedicated allocation in the 2025 Citizens Budget for remodeling and reconstruction. “This is not just about restoring walls,” he said. “It’s about restoring Enugu’s ability to host the nation’s key events and drive broad-based economic activity.”

Current state of the hotel reveal a transformed façade and near-completion of internal finishing works – tangible proof of the state’s commitment to delivering on infrastructure promises. “We wanted delegates to see themselves in comfort, convenience, and confidence when they arrive,” the Governor added, noting that the project was executed to match international hospitality standards.

With the NBA Annual General Conference scheduled for August 22–29, 2025, officials expect the hotel to absorb overflow demand from thousands of lawyers, media professionals, and exhibitors at the nearby Enugu International Conference Centre. “The hotel’s timing could not be more strategic,” said a state tourism enthusiast,  Okeluemaka Chikwendu. “It anchors conference tourism, increases room inventory, and strengthens capacity for hosting national gatherings.”

Analysts predict the commissioning will catalyze job creation and MSME growth, spurring demand for cleaners, caterers, transporters, event decorators, security providers, and creative agencies. One local catering entrepreneur, Josephine Ezeh, noted: “This reopening gives our business the opportunity to grow tenfold – Hotel Presidential means contracts, not just customers.”

As the final touches are completed ahead of next week’s commissioning, Hotel Presidential’s restoration turns a long-running liability into a renewed economic landmark. “We are reclaiming Enugu’s brand,” Governor Mbah concluded. “We’re investing in inclusivity, jobs, and a more prosperous future for our people.” GMTNewsng
